Interview with Rachel Augustine, Co-Owner
Will you tell us a little about your kids’ yoga program?
Kids yoga has been at the heart of Free Spirit since we opened in 2019. As a mom, longtime yoga teacher and someone with a background in art and design, I created the program to help kids grow into confident, creative and grounded humans. Our classes for ages 3โ13โincluding Mini Yogi, Kids’ Yoga, and Tween Yogaโblend yoga with art, games and social-emotional learning. Mini Yogi includes sweet partner poses with a caregiver, while Kids’ and Tween Yoga offer fun sequences and mindfulness practices. Each class supports the mind-body connection and gives kids tools they can carry with them for life.
What sets Free Spirit apart from the rest?
What makes Free Spirit’s yoga program special is our blend of movement, mindfulness and creativity, all in a space centered around kids and families. Our teachersโmany with advanced degrees in education or counselingโbring warmth, experience and a deep love for working with children. We also offer private sessions for neurodivergent kids, making yoga accessible to all. Much of our programming is inspired by my own childrenโfrom creative partner poses to playful themes and calming breathwork that eases anxiety and builds focus.
What are some of your favorite moments as a yoga instructor?
I love the sweet connections between parents and kidsโespecially during partner poses or savasana, when a hug or kiss says it all. With older kids, it’s so meaningful when they open up during circle time and feel truly heard. And there’s nothing like seeing a child’s face light up when they finally master a challenging pose!
What’s new and exciting for kids at Free Spirit this summer?
We’re turning up the magic in our Kids and Tween Yoga Camps with yoga sequences, outdoor yoga, mindfulness activities and ninja gym playtimeโand we’re debuting our very own Free Spirit Sun Salutation song!
