100% Local. No Paywalls.

Every day, the Source publishes a mix of locally reported stories on our website, keeping you up to date on developments in news, food, music and the arts. We’re committed to covering this city where we live, this city that we love, and we hear regularly from readers who appreciate our ability to put breaking news in context.

The Source has been a free publication for its 22 years. It has been free as a print version and continued that way when we began to publish online, on social media and through our newsletters.

But, as most of our readers know, times are different for local journalism. Tech giants are hoovering up small businesses and small-business advertising—which has been the staple for locally owned media. Without these resources, journalism struggles to bring coverage of community news, arts and entertainment that social media cannot deliver.

Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Oregon Tonight if You Can Brave the Cold

If you're brave enough, Bend's Polar Plunge takes place tonight at Riverbend Park.

In case you laid in bed all day, like I wanted to, you might look out your window and think, "Oh, it looks nice out there." In this instance you would be wrong. Don't let the sun trick you, it's arctic cold out there and for those of you participating in tonight's Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Oregon, I don't envy you.

Last year, Source staffer Sara Roth took a dip in the icy Deschutes River to raise money for Special Olympics Oregon. Her training might not have been the most effective, but in the end, she drove right in and were we ever proud - because the rest of us are admittedly a bunch of chickens.

Over 30 Plunge events take place in over 15 states throughout the country in order to show support and raise funds for the Special Olympics.

Tonight's event takes place at Riverbend Park, which is off Columbia St. on the Westside. Check in starts a 4:30pm, and there will be a costume contest at 6pm. Opening Ceremonies and the Polar Plunge itself begins at 6:30pm. There will no doubt be plenty of creative and hilarious costumes to witness, so throw on your parka and go out to support a great cause.
