Bend Names Canada Goose City's Official Bird

In a surprise move, the city of Bend, Oregon makes the Canada Goose its official bird, names April 1 "Bend Goose Day."

In a press release this morning, the city announced that beginning today, the Canada goose will now be recognized as the official bird of Bend, Oregon.

"While there has been some debate as to the merits of this species' presence in our parks and public areas, its hard to ignore that, at the very least, these birds are everywhere. As is their feces," said City Councilor and known goose enthusiast, Scott Ramsay.

The decision to bestow the honor was made in an executive session meeting of the city council last week. No geese were on hand for the meeting.

Ronald Durthin, associate professor of generally annoying birds at Oregon State University and author of Don't Touch My Honkers: Championing the Canada goose in the United States, was elated by the city's decision.

"It's high time that the city did something for the Canada goose. This is a big step. Last year, Bend was gassing these animals, now they're celebrating them like the prized kings and queens of nature that they truly are," said Durthin over the phone from a boat in small lake in southern British Columbia where he's researching for his next book, tentatively titled, Their Shit Don't Stink: The truth about goose feces.

According to the city, April 1 will be here-forth recognized as "Bend Goose Day" and will include a parade of geese (and Bendites dressed as geese) down Wall Street beginning next year.

And if you're still reading, have a Happy April Fool's Day.
