We're So Fat, Baby!

Oregon’s reputation of being slim and fit may not be as accurate as we thought according to the statistics found by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Oregon’s reputation of being slim and fit may not be as accurate as we thought according to the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, the ugly truth is that the obesity rates in Oregon have shot up an astonishing 121 percent since 1990. The increasing percentage is attributable to all you couch sitters and food junkies who lack of good nutrition and avoid physical activity at all costs based on a recent report by the Oregon Health Authority. The American Journal of Preventive Medicine predicts that these rates aren’t planning to slow down any time soon. If these daily routines and bad habits are maintained, Oregon’s obesity rates could hit a whopping 42 percent by 2030. We don't have far to go. More than 1.7 million Oregonians were overweight in 2009, that's more than half the population. So if these statistics haven’t forced you to dump out your stash of potato chips and chocolate treats, the fact that obesity-related illnesses cause approximately 1,400 deaths to Oregonians each year might do the trick. And if it doesn't kill us, it might just bankrupt us. Accoring to the OHA, obesity-related illness costs Oregon and Oregonians $1.6 billion annually. Time to pull that treadmill out of storage and slip into those running shoes Oregon.
