Small Business Saturday in Bend: How To

Posted on Sat, Nov 24, 2012 at 6:42 AM

Small Business Saturday (SBS) is the counterpoint to Black Friday.
It's simple: Rather than patronize gargantuan, faceless online retailers and big box stores, SBS encourages shoppers to buy local this holiday season.
Ironically, SBS was started in 2010 by American Express (not exactly small and local) but the idea was sound—promote local business and keep local dollars in the community. Today, Small Business Saturday is being recognized across the country as local retailers open their doors to shoppers, offering discounts, tea and cookies, whatever...anything to lure shoppers away from Amazon.com, Walmart, Best Buy and other such websites and national chains.

More money stays in Bend when you shop local.

In Bend, we have our own small business Saturday movement. Click THIS LINK to see a list of participating downtown retailers. I found that the list is not a comprehensive one, so if you don't see your favorite store listed, don't despair. It's likely they have a deal going on too.
Here's a sampling of who is doing what on Small Business Saturday (11am-10pm):

Local Joe (Jeans). 929 Wall Street (541) 385-7137. Buy one item get a 2nd at 25% off.

Silverado Jewelry Gallery (Jewelry). 1001 NW Wall St. (541) 322-8792. 10% off all counter jewelry.

Hot Box Betty (Clothing). 903 Wall Street (541) 383-0050. 20% off all day.

Dream Pebbles (Bath products). 114 Minnesota Avenue (541) 350-7818. Open at 9am, serving wine and giving away a free vintage wine glass with a $10+ purchase.

Douglas Fine Jewelry Design (Jewelry). 920 Bond (on Minnesota-east of Bond) (541) 389-2901. All Champagne Oregon Sunstones (set in jewelry and loose) 50% off.

The Blvd. (Clothing boutique). 1024 Bond Street (541) 389-9940. Deep discounts all weekend and a drawing for a $250 gift card.

According to the website 3/50 Project, a nationally-recognized movement dedicated to buying local, for every $100 spent locally, $68 of those dollars return to the community via taxes, payroll, etc. If you spend that same $100 at a national chain, only $43 makes its way back to the community. AND, if you spend that money online NOTHING COMES HOME.
Check in today with other local retailers, we're sure that there are lots more deals to be had.
