100% Local. No Paywalls.

Every day, the Source publishes a mix of locally reported stories on our website, keeping you up to date on developments in news, food, music and the arts. We’re committed to covering this city where we live, this city that we love, and we hear regularly from readers who appreciate our ability to put breaking news in context.

The Source has been a free publication for its 22 years. It has been free as a print version and continued that way when we began to publish online, on social media and through our newsletters.

But, as most of our readers know, times are different for local journalism. Tech giants are hoovering up small businesses and small-business advertising—which has been the staple for locally owned media. Without these resources, journalism struggles to bring coverage of community news, arts and entertainment that social media cannot deliver.

Please consider becoming a supporter of locally owned journalism through our Source Insider program. Learn more about our program’s benefits by clicking through today.

Checking in With New Music Michael

If you remember a few months back, I wrote about a couple of music blogs you should be reading. One of them was Edmonton's New Music Michael.

I actually got to hang out with editor/writer Michael Senchuk in Boise this summer before, during and after a Wilco concert. And though I had traded new band tweets with this guy for a couple of years, sitting down and talking with him revealed that he knows a crap ton more about music than I had any idea about.

Well, this guy just released his top ten songs of 2012 and it's pretty cool.

I'm very impressed with his inclusion of Django Django's song "Default." That album has been on my radar almost all year and is sure to make my year end list when it comes in out in the Source next week. There are some obvious gems, like songs by The Lumineers and Japandroids, but the great thing about New Music Michael is you always learn something too. Case in point, his number one song, "When The Lillies Die" by IO Echo. I admit it— I didn't know about this song and it's awesome! Kudos Michael!

Check out a Spotify playlist of his top ten below (song #4 "Morning Angels" by My Violaine Morning wasn't available so there is a video of the song instead).
