Method Man Coming to Bend

Posted By on Thu, Jan 31, 2013 at 7:06 PM

Careful Method... this isnt Washington.
  • Careful Method... this isn't Washington.

Bend has definitely hosted a fair share of rap artists over the last few months. Snoop Dogg was here recently as well as DMX. We've also been scammed a bit about some coming here.

But the announcement that former Def Jam recording artist Method Man is coming to The Domino Room Feb. 27 seems legit enough. The show is courtesy of Random Presents— a trusted source for live music bookings in our community and tickets are up for sale on Bend Ticket— another trusted outlet.

Oh... and there's also the fact that Method Man hasn't done anything worth noting in a long time. (his website hasn't even been updated since 2009) So there really would be no reason to think anyone would want to hype a fake Method Man show.

It could be that this is an attempt at drumming up support for the new album he's been hinting at for the last 3 years. But either way, there's bound to be some Wu-Tang fans out there who will want to attend more for his old school stuff rather than anything new he's putting out.

Old school, like this awesome song from the movie How High. Which also begs the question... WTF ever happened to Toni Braxton?

Seasonal BLM Closures Includes Trout Creek

Posted By on Thu, Jan 31, 2013 at 2:08 PM

The south side of Trout Creek Trail is closed Jan. 15 — Aug. 31 to protect nesting golden eagles. Other areas at the trad climbing stronghold remain open. Climbers have reportedly been very respectful of such closures at TC, which has helped access at this zone.

Here's a list of all the closures we just got from the BLM (notable closures in bold for your convenience):

Worthy Brewing Got it Right

Posted By on Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 8:53 PM

We went to the MASSIVE Worthy Brewing campus last night to see what all the flap was about. They're not officially open to the public until Monday, Feb. 4, but we put our journalist credentials to good use and went for an early beer and pizza. We got both, as well as a tour from Mr. Worthy himself.

Huge patio, good for sunsets. Also, fire pits!
  • Huge patio, good for sunsets. Also, fire pits!

Roger Worthington, owner, bike racer and practicing attorney, met us near the door. He's intense! Which is probably how he managed to do a bang-up job on his first restaurant/brewery venture. Worthington knows what he wants and he knows how to go about getting it done. The evidence was everywhere.

Council May Call a Vote on Controversial Room Tax Increase

Posted By on Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 8:18 PM

A long-standing feud between two factions of the tourism community is boiling over again this week. This time, the conflict is about whether to raise hotel room taxes.

The Bend City Council discussed whether to take the proposal to raise room taxes to the voters at its meeting on Wednesday night, but deferred a decision on that question to its next meeting on Feb. 6.

Right now, tourists pay 9 percent on top of the cost of renting a room for a night in taxes. That money goes to the city, which then sends 30 percent of it on to a group called Visit Bend.

Visit Bend is basically a marketing group with the sole mission of promoting Bend tourism that currently has a $1.2 million budget.

If the room tax, which is formally called a transient room tax, is increased Visit Bend will receive about $600,000 more per year to work with.

But a large group of hotel owners, like Wayne Purcell of the Riverhouse, have felt for some time that Visit Bend does not serve their needs and told the head of Visit Bend just that at a private and tense meeting earlier this week.

A Story of Burly Bike Commutes

Posted By on Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 3:48 PM

How long is your daily bike commute? Is it like that of New York resident Christian Edstrom?

From a New York Times story published Jan. 25:

Fastening his helmet, Mr. Edstrom stepped outside and into early-morning indigo. In a minute he was rolling down the driveway of his snow-covered Cape-style house, his headlights aglow, on a 40-mile journey to his workplace, JPMorgan, at One Chase Manhattan Plaza, a trip he would make entirely on a Zanconato cyclocross bicycle.

Mr. Edstrom, who works in JPMorgan’s operations division, bicycles round trip to work at least twice a week, logging approximately 600 miles a month. He averages 17 miles an hour and arrives at work by about 7 a.m. “The traffic in Lower Manhattan kills my time,” he said. When he doesn’t ride, he passes for an ordinary commuter, and takes Metro-North into Grand Central Terminal.
