New Music Roundup: 3 Albums to Check Out

The Flower Lane
Domino Recording Co. (2013)

The new release by Ducktails is in a word: dreamy. But not dreamy in the ethereal kind of way albums from front man Matthew Mondanile main project Real Estate can be. This album— titled The Flower Lane— has meat on it. The lo-fi rock is thick with 70's psych as are the vocals. So, unlike music by Real Estate, the third album from Ducktails is more for listening to in a velvety basement than at a beach house.

We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic
Jagjaguwar (2013)

Following in the footsteps of the vintage rock sound used by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros is California group Foxygen. Though the band's second release We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic trades more in classic rock spritzed with 80's alternative than the bohemian rock of Edward Sharpe. That makes for a decadent album tinged with fun pop. And though the record's third track "On Blue Mountain" seems to rip off a bit of Elvis's "Suspicious Minds," the song is still very entertaining. The only downfall is that Ambassadors of Peace & Magic doesn't quite capture the 'magic' that was Foxygen's first album Take the Kids Off Broadway. Now that is one jubilant recording.

Local Natives
French Kiss (2013)

The follow-up to Local Natives acclaimed debut Gorilla Manor was one of the most anticipated of 2013 long before the date of its release was ever announced. Relying more on somber, haunting tunes this time around, Local Natives distance themselves from the bouncy island guitar of the first album. They even get sonic with a little shoegaze on the fourth track "Breakers." The result is an album less upfront about being catchy, requiring listeners to spend more time with each song before deciding which ones earn the repeat button.
