In honor of the iconic comedian, next week's Source is a tribute to Martin—reviews of his books, dining and exercise suggestions and a salute to his cultural influence.

Post your favorite Steve Martin gag (video links encouraged), and we'll pick a random winner on Wednesday (when the Steve Martin issue of the Source hits stands) for a pair of tickets to the show!

Come to Roots, Score Some Music

Posted By on Sat, Sep 28, 2013 at 2:54 PM

IMAG0886_1_1.jpg
The nice folks over at Warner Bros. Music Group sent me several copies of VERSES, a compilation of tracks from their artists. I'll be traipsing around Bend Roots this afternoon with 25 copies of the disc featuring tracks from Jeff the Brotherhood, Atlas Genius, Iron & Wine, The Flaming Lips and more. All you gotta do to score one is find me and ask!

If you can find the guy carrying a gray messenger bag that sports a vintage Nixon/Agnew campaign button, you've got me. You'll also know it's me if I've got my camera out taking shots of some of the great performances at the many Bend Roots Revival stages.

See you there!

Sincerely,

Ethan Maffey
SOUND Editor

Friday Mixtape!

Posted By on Thu, Sep 26, 2013 at 9:00 PM

friday_mixtape.jpg

Autumn in is many things: a crisp sweet smelling breeze, the crunch of fallen leaves beneath a pair of Gor-Tex shoes, colorful pillow-y scarves around the necks of women strolling through Drake park and soft incandescent tunes that float like thick smelling wood fire smoke.

This Friday Mixtape ushers in the Fall Equinox with cozy songs. The tracks “Young” by Dallas Texas band Air Review and “Mtn Tune” by Oakland outfit Trails and Ways flicker like a happy flame on a Pumpkin scented candle. And more rustic acoustic tracks from Paper Bird and Matt the Electrician are as warming as a heavy afghan blanket.

There may be plenty of sunshine left in 2013, but it’s going to get colder. Snuggle up with this playlist of hearty music when it does.

TONIGHT'S LIVE MUSIC: Matt the Electrician

Posted By on Tue, Sep 24, 2013 at 9:32 AM

The blissful sound of acoustic singer/songwriter Matt the Electrician has a lot of lyrical substance backing it up. Read more on that in last week's piece about the Austin artist. He'll be playing tonight at The Belfry in Sisters and the performance is well worth the drive.

Need extra convincing? There's also this:

All Hands on Deck: Mark Ransom needs your help!

Posted By on Sat, Sep 21, 2013 at 12:08 PM

The Bend Roots Revival festival is less than a week away. According to organizer extraordinaire Mark Ransom, preparation activities could use your help.

They've got a walk through with the city on Monday and are particularly concerned with making the grounds at Pakit Liquidators— the site for this year's event— ADA compliant.

Ransom says come down anytime and he'll put you to work. So give a hand to the Rise Up International non-profit and claims some rewarding ownership in Bend's arts and live music scene!

Bend Gets Its Own Oakland Raiders Fan Club

Posted By on Fri, Sep 20, 2013 at 3:01 PM

image.jpeg

Oakland Raiders fans have a pretty terrible reputation.

Fights are common at games—so much so that even home fans are choosing to stay away, which is affecting ticket sales. There was that terrible stabbing incident from a few years back, in which a Raiders fan knifed a Chargers fan during a scuffle. Still, the Raider Nation remains defiantly proud. "Football's Most Notorious Fans," boasts the Raider Nation banner hung at home games. An Outkick the Coverage post lists Raiders fans among their "Ten Dumbest Fan Bases in America" (No. 7).

But a group of local Raiders enthusiasts are changing that negative perception. For years MC Mystic (Aaron Chambers), a local DJ and silver-and-black blooded Raiders supporter, has been looking for a place his fellow Bend Raiders fans can call home and has found one in Volcanic Theater Pub. Their group, Bend Oregon Raiders Nation (BORN) has gathered at VTP in droves for the last two football games. And though they like to scream and shout at the big screen TV, they're a sweet and peaceful bunch. They're inviting any and all Raiders fans to join them at the next VTP-hosted game (1:30 pm Sept. 29 vs. Redskins) and keep in touch via their Facebook page.

Friday Mixtape!

Posted By on Fri, Sep 20, 2013 at 11:06 AM

friday_mixtape.jpg

Don’t be surprised if by next week, the Source’s Friday Mixtape is full of songs prepared to usher in a Fall feeling.

But that’s still seven days away; meaning that this week; we’re still pumping out summer-y tunes that while they do flirt with a more calming vibe, can still be played at backyard BBQs.

And to prove that, the playlist starts out with the tropical pop of Oxford England’s Jonquil and their frisky track “I Don’t Know I Know.” Add to that romping rock by Concrete Knives and decadent electro-pop by Superhumanoids and this mixtape quickly becomes a sultry collection of songs that can keep things heated up long past the Autumn Equinox.

Film Festival kick-off!

Posted By on Fri, Sep 20, 2013 at 10:18 AM

I always hated when people introduced me by way of my (famous in allergy doctor circles) dad. "Oh, this is Dr. Busse's son." As if I didn't have my own personality.

But, here I go anyway: Dee Snider! The massive-haired Twisted Sister? Well . . his son is a sick mo-fo, in the most glorious, wonderful, Quentin Tarratino way. His short film is wonderful. I haven't laughed this much since Anchorman. (There is a trailer for Fool's Day.)

Over the past three weeks, we have been watching films for the upcoming Bend Film Festival. They are really great - meaning: You should be excited, and should be thinking about heading out next Thursday to Deschutes Brewery when the schedule is released and there is a (slightly premature) kickoff party.
