Sometimes the weekly Friday Mixtape is themed by genre or otherwise put together with some overriding reason like to preview a music festival. Sometimes, the playlist is just about introducing readers to great music. That’s what this week’s edition is all about.

From adult contemporary rock super-group Tired Pony (Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol, Richard Colburn of Belle & Sebastian and Peter Buck of R.E.M. just to name a few), to chamber pop band The Miserable Rich, this mixtape is full of off-the-beaten-path music.

Pay special attention to the back-to-back tracks from the former front man of Colorado’s The Czars, John Grant. After leaving Colorado and working with bands like The Flaming Lips, Grant recorded his very LCD Soundsystem meets Pink Floyd sophomore album in Iceland and released it earlier this year. These songs illuminate the diversity of that album Pale Green Ghosts with the first track “Black Belt” showcasing Grants’ take on synth rock while the second track “GMF” indulges a more classic sound.
