SCREENING TONIGHT: McConkey at The Tower Theatre

Posted By on Sat, Dec 28, 2013 at 7:00 AM

Extreme skiing pioneer Shane McConkey, who died skiing in 2009, must have been one of the most filmed athletes of all time. Since boyhood, McConkey, an affable daredevil, was obsessed with taking calculated risks—most of which were captured on camera. Using carefully selected clips, the directors of McConkey expertly match old footage with current interviews that include McConkey’s friends, family and peers—as well as his estranged father, an extreme skier in his time—to perfectly capture the innovator’s indomitable spirit. Of course the 110-minute McConkey includes plenty of radical big mountain skiing as well as the legend's well-documented antics: naked skiing, BASE jumping, gags and goofs.

What in the World? Today's News

Posted By on Fri, Dec 27, 2013 at 10:36 AM

Likely the last What in the World for 2013, here's what's brewing in the news today.

Party at the N.S.A! This morning a federal judge ruled that the National Security Agency's practice of keeping systematic phone records of all Americans is lawful! The decision caused conflict in lower courts and means that the final decision in the matter will likely be made by the Supreme Court.

A new war on sex...The Associated Press reported this morning that the number of reported sexual assault cases in the military has jumped more than 50 percent in the last year to more than 5,000 cases filed by Sept. 30, 2013.

In lighter news...TV bender! If you still have a few days off, Netflix has released a list of all of the things you should be binge watching right now.

And here's a lovely list of 100 things we didn't know last year provided by BBC. #1. It would have taken 2.5 million seagulls to lift James's giant peach into the air, not the 501 that Roald Dahl suggested.

Finally...enjoy DJ Earworm's United States of Pop 2013 music mashup.

Best Albums of 2013: 50-26

Posted By on Wed, Dec 25, 2013 at 12:16 PM

Matt & Kali play Silvermoon in Bend.
  • Matt & Kali play Silvermoon in Bend.

Two albums featured in the Source's Best Albums of 2013 have very close ties to Bend and are back-to-back here in this post.

The first album in at number 30 is Vegas Wedding from former Bendite Dan Pantenburg of The Autonomics. One of his many side projects this past year was the quiet release of a solo album under the name Steam Engines and it is brilliant. Folksy and rich sounding, this DIY album shines as a wonderful singer/songwriter record from an alt-punk rocker. Listen to it here.

The second album backs up to Steam Engines at number 29 and is from long-time Bend favorite's Matt Harmon and Kali Giaritta whom most Bendites might remember as The Ascetic Junkies. Now, the duo record as There Is No Mountain and their sound is just as infectiously fun.

Their self-titled folk punk debut album saw the long awaited release of live-show favorites and end-of-the-world inspired songs "Good News" and "O! Painted Hills" while also turning in lighthearted moments with "The Nail Salon." Truly their music is precious, timeless and deserving of our countdown.

Check out the rest of the music below but before you do, don't forget to share our FACEBOOK post for a chance to win some music!

This time we're giving away an album from last year's best-of list and one that finally became quite popular in 2013. English folk band Passenger took a year to catch on in the states, but their music can now be heard on top 40 radio stations across the country. For those that didn't pay close attention to the pages of the Source's SOUND section last year, here's a review of that album which can now be yours for sharing.

Top Five Hikes in/around Bend
By Kolby Kirk
1. Shevlin Park - Within the 650-acres of mostly undeveloped land lying just west of town, there's a frayed-rope of trails running through the small canyon. Each season offers a new look at nature. I've seen great horned owls and golden mushrooms in the autumn, bald eagles in the winter, and dozens of types of wildflowers in the spring and summer. Don't let the label of "park" fool you; this place is a nature-lover's paradise.

Bend music makes the top 100
  • Bend music makes the top 100
As we crack the top 100, bands ought to become more familiar.

If you're someone who takes in a lot of local concerts, it should be no surprise that Bend's instrumental rock outfit Isles made it into this stage of the Source's year end countdown.

Their shows quickly became legend over the course of 2013 with their sweeping rock building on the success of bands like Explosions In The Sky. Since their debut album Viracocha isn't available on Spotify, make sure to check it out on Bandcamp.

This time we've got the 85th entry, the 12th studio release from psych rockers Of Montreal and their beautifully decorated record, Lousy With Sylvianbriar and it can be yours just by sharing our FACEBOOK post to your newsfeed.
