Stranded Antarctic explorers, saved! Today, a Chinese helicopter plucked all 52 passengers from a Russian boat that has been trapped by ice near Antarctica since Dec. 24.

Goodbye, Mayor Bloomberg! Hello, Mayor de Blasio. Yesterday, New Yorkers welcomed new mayor Bill de Blasio during his inauguration speech. President Clinton swore in the progressive new Mayor in front of a crowd of notables.

Accident or Terrorism? An explosion killed Palestinian ambassador to the Czech Republic, Jamal al-Jamal yesterday in Prague. News today suggests the ambassador was killed by a bomb attached to his safe.

New laws for 2014. The top 12 noteworthy laws that will go into effect in 2014. Among them, specific transgender rights for Californians. Also, Oregon mothers WILL now be allowed to bring home their placenta from the hospital after giving birth.

Snow! The middle and eastern states are bracing for the first big winter storm of the year, which is expected to drop a foot or more of snow. But don't expect much here (maybe a few inches at Mt. Bachelor).
