Johnny Cash: Covered Featuring Brandon Flowers, Father John Misty and Local Natives

Posted By on Fri, Mar 28, 2014 at 4:41 PM

This week, I reviewed the previously unreleased tracks of "Out Among the Stars," a posthumous Johnny Cash studio album. I stand by my suggestion that everyone should listen to the album, although it may not be the best of the best in the esteemed Cash collection.

Today, one of my favorite live music video makers, La Blogothèque, released a pretty amazing 16-minutes of Cash tribute, featuring Brandon Flowers (front-man for The Killers), Dawes, Father John Misty and Local Natives covering Johnny Cash tunes in the desert, on the farm and literally, as the new album's title track suggests, out among the stars. Enjoy below.

Pickathon!

Now that the lineup for Pickathon—Oregon’s darling music festival—has been announced, it’s time to deep-dive into the eclectic group of artists who will be playing stages and barns in the wooden thickets of the Pendarvis Farm outside of Portland.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in this year’s lineup is the return of new-grass outfit Nickel Creek. After a nearly eight year hiatus, Chris Thile, along with brother/sister combo Sean and Sara Watkins have released the joyously apocalyptic song “21st of May” ahead of their new album set for a release later this year.

Joining Nickel Creek this year are other bluegrass acts like Robbie Fulks, and the Celtic-inspired Old Buck. But they have plenty of company a far cry from anything rustic.

Legendary Los Angeles punk rockers X will be showing up as will Parquet Courts. Old school R&B makes an appearance with 60’s singer Bobby Patterson and smooth lo-fi indie band Unknown Mortal Orchestra will blanket listeners like a slow moving psychedelic fog.

And since it wasn't on Spotify, don’t pass up music on Bandcamp from Texas singer Shakey Graves. Tunes from this “anti-folk phenomenon”—as NPR described him—are ghostly old-timey acoustic pieces steeped in weary emotions.

Friday Mixtape!

Posted By on Fri, Mar 21, 2014 at 10:57 AM

1394163853-friday_mixtape.jpg

Since the sun is still shining, this week’s Friday Mixtape keeps the pop music flowing.

Raining down plucky synth and buttery vocals, songs from L.A. power rockers Smallpools, and Sweden’s art pop outfit Be The Bear, this playlist is as crisp and sunny as they come.

Corvallis native yOya turns in “Fool’s Gold,” a new song for 2014 with sweet piano melodies and lifted harmonies perfect for a spring sunset and the pillow-y rock track “All That I Needed” from Fremont—the side project of Nat Johnson and Dave Gulick of Portland’s pop rock band Derby—adds a song that is perfect for waking up to on a dew-frosted morning.

Along with EDM-backed island music from Party Supplies and hand-clap rock from The Sun Parade, even if a small shower does wash over the High Desert, this mixtape ought to mitigate it quite nicely.

"Truth in Site Coalition" Speaks Up Against OSU Cascades 4-year Westside Location

Posted By on Fri, Mar 21, 2014 at 10:00 AM

Last night marked the first open public meeting of the "Truth in Site Coalition," a citizen group concerned with the proposed location of the new OSU Cascades campus on the westside of Bend. Here's what you need to know:

-->While the campus is set to open in the fall of 2015, the group is threatening to take legal action against the location, a 10-acre lot and former pumice mine on Chandler and Simpson Ave.

-->During the first public meeting at The Bend Armory, around 200 people showed support for the coalition's mission, asked questions and expressed concerns about the current proposed location.

-->Repeated concerns included increased traffic, parking, surrounding neighborhood property values, student housing and the cost burden of other improved infrastructure that the University will require.

-->"This is not a done deal," repeated Scott Morgan, a spokes person for the coalition. He also made clear that the time frame for the site selection and opening of the campus by fall of 2015 is unrealistic, saying that it's a better timeframe for building a custom home than a well-planned university.

-->The coalition made it clear that they are not in opposition of a 4-year university in Bend. They claim to be proponents of a well thought out location for said school and a measure of public input on site selection.

-->The coalition plans to take legal and technical opposition to the campus location by hiring a traffic engineer, a land use lawyer and soil specialists.

-->The group says they have raised $10,000 of a required $50,000 (likely more after taking donations at last night's meeting) to take the legal action they have planned.

-->Although the meeting was put on by private citizens, Becky Johnson, vice president of OSU Cascades, was in attendence as well as several planners from the city to hear public concerns.

You can learn more on the group's Facebook Page: OSU Cascades- TRUTH in Site
