FOLK—With his long scraggly hair, father-time beard, thrift-store workingman’s flannel and jeans, and emphatic, throaty voice, Parr looks and sounds like the real deal. The Minnesota old-timer, with his three instruments—a banjo and two Nationals—draws his inspiration from growing up in cold Minnesota without a TV but instead with an arsenal of his dad’s recordings of America’s musical founding fathers, including Charley Patton and Lightnin’ Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly.
