What in the World: Bend Gets Snow, WWU Classes Are Cancelled, Man Arrested After Shooting Black Lives Matters Protesters, and Turkey Shoots Down Russian Warplane

It looks like the snow will stick around for the rest of the day and into tonight. The high is 36 and the low is 19.

Classes are cancelled at Western Washington University today after threats targeting minority students appeared on social media. University President Bruce Shepard is calling the comments posted on social media hate speech. Students received emails and text alerts this morning around 6 a.m. (OPB)

A man has been arrested in connection with the shooting of five people at a Black Lives Matter protest in Minneapolis. The shooting victims injuries are not considered life threatening and are undergoing treatment at local hospitals. Police are also seeking two other men, who were also believed to be involved with the shooting. People were gathered outside of a Minneapolis police precinct protesting the shooting death of Jamar Clark by a police officer. Three men opened fire on the crowd after being escorted away from the protest. (New York Times)

A Russian warplane was shot down after entering Turkish airspace close to the Syrian border on Tuesday. Turkey says the Russian plane was warned multiple times before entering its airspace. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the actions a “stab in the back.” NATO called for an emergency meeting in Brussels on Tuesday. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said NATO supports its ally, Turkey. (New York Times) (NATO)
