100% Local. No Paywalls.

Every day, the Source publishes a mix of locally reported stories on our website, keeping you up to date on developments in news, food, music and the arts. We’re committed to covering this city where we live, this city that we love, and we hear regularly from readers who appreciate our ability to put breaking news in context.

The Source has been a free publication for its 22 years. It has been free as a print version and continued that way when we began to publish online, on social media and through our newsletters.

But, as most of our readers know, times are different for local journalism. Tech giants are hoovering up small businesses and small-business advertising—which has been the staple for locally owned media. Without these resources, journalism struggles to bring coverage of community news, arts and entertainment that social media cannot deliver.

Please consider becoming a supporter of locally owned journalism through our Source Insider program. Learn more about our program’s benefits by clicking through today.

The Brewers Association (BA), announced the results of the 2016 World Beer Cup Awards (WBC) at the conclusion of the Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America® in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the evening of Friday, May 6, 2016.

With the highest number of entries to date, the 2016 edition of the WBC saw 6,596 beers from 1,907 breweries representing 55 countries—a 38.5 percent increase in the number of entries from the 2014 WBC, which had 4,754 entries.  The 253 judges from 31 countries awarded 287 medals across 96 beer style categories.

This year, Oregon’s breweries were awarded 19 medals to 15 Oregon brewing companies, which placed Oregon third amongst U.S. brewers in the number of medals won.  The World Beer Cup Champion Brewery and Brewmaster Award in the Very Small Brewing Company Category was awarded to James Smith of the Arch Rock Brewing Co. in Gold Beach, Oregon.

Items of Note for 2016:

Oregon had the only brewing company to win 4 awards in the competition with Breakside Brewery winning four awards across their two breweries in Portland and Milwaukie, Oregon.

Four of the same breweries that were awarded medals at the 2014 WBC, won medals in 2016.

The originator of the Cascadian Dark Ale style, Barley Browns Brew Pub, won the gold medal for Turmoil for the second time in a row in the American-style Black Ale Category 94.

The Fat Heads Brewery Ohio location that won the Gold medal in the Imperial India Pale Ale (the second largest category) and the bronze for American-style Black Ale also make the same beers at their Portland, Oregon location.

Congrats to James and Kristen Smith of the Arch Rock Brewing Company for winning the Champion Brewery & Brewmaster Award in the Very Small Brewing Company Category.  This is the third consecutive World Beer Cup where a small, coastal Oregon brewery has won a Champion Brewery & Brewmaster Award, with the previous two going to the Pelican Brewing Company and their Brewmaster Darron Welch.
