Solar storms may produce Northern Lights viewing in Oregon tonight

Posted By on Fri, Sep 12, 2014 at 9:22 AM

Solar storms are giving Oregonians a good chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis this evening. Looking to the north before the moon comes out (9:36 tonight) will give you the best chance. Bend photographers were out in force last night without a ton of luck (though the Milky Way was spectacular). Get out there this evening and enjoy.

Two Bulls Fire

Posted By on Sun, Jun 8, 2014 at 8:34 AM

The Two Bulls Fire erupted Saturday afternoon in the vicinity of Tumalo Reservoir. The cause of the fire is still under investigation as residents of Bend are waking to a smokey Sun Morning. By Saturday evening residents in the area of upper Skyliner Rd and the Saddleback subdivision had been asked to evacuate and level 2 (pre- evacuation) notices were given to residents west of Mt Washington Drive and North of Century Drive (an area that includes the Broken Top and Tetherow developments). Northwest crossing (east of Mt Washington Dr) has been put on a level 1 alert. Many residents helped evacuate animals from the affected areas on Saturday afternoon. The fire was popular for residents and visitors with cameras; Pilot Butte and Aubrey Butte were crowded most of the afternoon and into the early evening with a host of camera wielding curious visitors. Multiple agencies responded to the fire that was spotted at 12:48pm from Black Butte fire lookout according to the interagency dispatch center. Incident command listed that the fires are staffed with 3 hand crews, including the Redmond and Prineville Hotshot crews, 13 engines, 3 air tankers, 2 helicopters, a dozer, and a water tender. As of Saturday evening the fire was reported to be zero percent contained. For more info and to stay up to date on evacuations visit http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/3889/

Truck Stop Skate Park closes its doors

Posted By on Wed, Apr 23, 2014 at 11:59 AM

The Truck Stop Skate Park, Bend's only indoor skate park, closed it's doors on April 12th. The building was recently sold to make way for basketball courts. At this point there is not a new location slated for the park. There is hope that a new location can be found. A skateboard art show and fundraiser to help with the relocation process is being held this Sat April 26th - hosted by SOLSK8S as part of the Last Saturday happenings at The Workhouse . See the flyer below as well as some photos from The Truck Stop and video of the last Saturday session.

Bend Fire Department—More Photos

Posted By on Wed, Apr 23, 2014 at 9:44 AM

First off, welcome to the "Bend Lens Blog"—This blog was started to capture Bend news and events through photography. Occasionally photos will link with stories to offer more insight and a richer view of the story. Other times the photos will stand on their own as the story.

Feel free to share any ideas for photo stories with us via e mail or comment.

Thanks for looking,
Matt

The following photos are part of our story on the Bend Fire Department. In my time taking photos with the department I was awed by the amount of work they are doing with what they have for resources and time. I was able to see them literally saving lives. Not only was I taken in and shown a little bit of their daily lives (and served some delicious spaghetti and meatballs), but I was witness to their camaraderie, their passion and care for their jobs, and their genuine concern for the community they serve.

It is my hope that these photos tell just a little bit more of that story. The photos were taken over a series of days as they worked, trained, and occasionally and reluctantly posed for me.
