October along the Deschutes is always stunning. Much so recently when I went there with a German photographer friend. Its always great when you can impress visitors with the scenic beauty here in Central Oregon.

This morning turned out to be one of those wow moments. The clouds sat just right with enough gaps in the East so the first rays of the sun would hit the trees in their autumn best along the river.

Shot upstream from the boat ramp at Dillon Falls all we really had to do was use a wide angle with the camera on tripod. I added a Split Density Neutral Grey Filter to tone down the sky and kept shooting.

Swampy Shelter at dusk

Swampi Shelter at dusk

Sometimes you have to plan ahead to get the photo you want. I envisioned a photo of the Swampy Lakes Shelter at dusk with some pink sky behind it.

Before heading out at around 2 PM I packed two Nikon SB800 Speedlights which I outfitted with a yellow gel each. It is much easier to do this ready in the warmth of your home. I brought my trusted Nikon D800 with a 24-70 Zoom lens and a carbon fiber tripod.

After skiing up through the forest I placed the two Flash units in the hut and used Pocket Wizard wireless transmitters to trigger them remotely from my camera. My wife was sitting in the shelter keeping an eye on the flash and shifting them into perfect location. The shoot took less than 10 minutes before we could ski back to the car park. Needless to say the run trough the forest at dusk was pure beauty.

I further enhanced the image in Photoshop so the yellow light in the shelter would contrast nicely with the blue tones of the snow.

Lyrids meteor shower

Posted By on Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 2:36 PM

Photographer Brad Goldpaint is a night owl for good reasons. He creates stunning images of the night sky. "Beyond the Rim" was taken in Crater Lake National Park during the Lyrids meteor shower on April 20/21. It is made up of 9 images and includes the Milky Way rising behind Crater Lake, reflecting off the water, and a lone Lyrid meteor passing overhead.”
