One Model Oregon, a local competition that helps aspiring models ages 14-28 to navigate the tough world of professional modeling, has opened its second round of voting!

The contestants participate in photo shoots with local photographers to help build their portfolios and jumpstart their modeling careers. Kind of like Bend's own version of "America's Next Top Model," except YOU get to vote for the winner!

Vote for your favorite models here! You can vote once every 24-hours.

The Source will be posting Q&As with each model along with exclusive photos and updates on the competition. Today's featured model is 18-year-old Ashlly von Hurst.

If you were on a deserted island, what book would you want with you?
My original Oxford first edition of poetry.

Favorite actor and actress?
Hugh Jackman and Helena Bonham Carter

Who is the most influential person in your life?
My father, he is a grand man and has lived his life helping others; and continues to do so by always putting his family first.

Secret wish or dream?
A dream of mine, that I have had since I can remember, is to become a well-known international model. My godmother was an amazing beautiful woman who modeled in San Francisco. She put it in my mind that I could model and would encourage me every moment she got.

Something interesting about your family?
I am half Mexican and half Scottish. Though on my Scottish side, we belong to the family name Glover in the Drummond Clan. In Scotland there is a castle dedicated to my Glover family. It has been turned into a museum over the years, and at the very end of the castle is a book with the signatures of all my distant family. Hopefully mind will be there soon as well.

Be sure to check out One Model Oregon's fashion show at WinterFest in the Bent Lounge, Friday Feb. 14 at 7 pm.

Have You Seen the New Olympic Uniforms? They're Made From Oregon Wool

Posted By on Thu, Jan 23, 2014 at 12:08 PM

The uniforms for the 2014 opening ceremony, designed by Ralph Lauren are made from Imperial Stock Ranch wool!

An hour and 40 minutes into the cracked high desert northeast of Bend, eight miles past the barely recognizable "town" of Antelope, the Imperial Stock Ranch was established in 1871 and quickly developed into one of the principal sheep ranches in the nation.

Now, the ranch is a window into the rich history of the west. See this video detailing the journey of the wool from the backs of the sheep right here in Central Oregon, to gaudy Sochi sweaters!

If you haven't checked out the changes, you might be surprised to find that the former Boken feels a bit more like a night club, at least after 10 pm, and the new space has regained some of it's former Mad Happy musical inclinations with DJs spinning most weekend nights. Tonight, DJ Jason Harlowe will provide tunes for the show this evening.

Local designers include Natasha Ray Spekktor, Geek Chic and Artby Jarrod Arthur, who was featured in our Culture story last week. Read more about Arthur here.

Check out the Facebook event here and enjoy some Bend-made fashion tonight at 8 pm.

How to Walk Outside Today

Posted By on Wed, Feb 23, 2011 at 7:55 PM

marv.jpg
This morning, I walked outside of my house and noticed that, due to Snowpocalypse 3: The Reckoning, my steps and driveway had turned into an outdoor ice skating rink. Now, this would be awesome if I was Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone, and had two bumbling burglars trying to rob my parent’s empty house. But I was just trying to get to work and I don’t have health insurance.

This got me thinking about shoe choices. Below are some of my suggestions for what to wear when boots just don’t cut it:

1. YakTrax

yaktrax.jpg

These are probably the most practical options. You slide them onto the outside of your shoes, and unless you are on 100% ice, the metal coils keep you pretty steady on your feet.

2. Crampons

crampons.jpg

A little burlier, these are like YakTrax on steroids – but instead of metal coils, there are claw-like knives that grip the ice. Luckily, as this is Central Oregon, your neighbor probably has some you can borrow.

3. Ice Skates

iceskates.jpg

Normally, I wouldn’t recommend wearing ice skates to work. But when else can you do figure eights down the street? Plus, you can bodycheck people and blame it on the influence of your footwear.

And if you’re a bike commuter, might we recommend:

Practical and stylish.

Have other suggestions? Leave them in the comments.
