Karma is very real for Martin Shkreli

Posted By on Thu, Dec 17, 2015 at 1:43 PM

Poor Martin Shkreli. The chief executive officer of Turing Pharmaceuticals and KaloBios Pharmaceuticals Inc is having one hell of a year. First he becomes the target of the American media and becomes the most hated man in the country for raising the price of life saving AIDS medication by 5000 percent.
Then he purchases the only copy of a legendary Wu-Tang Clan album for $2 Million, followed by the founder of Wu-Tang, RZA, openly speaking out against him just days later. Now Martin is beefing with RZA as the world watches and laughs.
But then today hits, in what some might call an early Christmas present to the world, Shkreli is arrested for fraud by the FBI. According to Reuters, the indictment says he made false representations to MSMB investors to draw in over 3 million in investments. To pay back investors Shkreli and an accomplice misappropriated 11 million in assets and sham investment deals. The truly sad part of the whole thing: now poor, poor Shkreli won't be able to see Star Wars tonight. Karma is real, America.. Be nice.
Just in case you think I'm being harsh, here is a quote from Shkreli when asked him if he would consider sharing the Wu-Tang album with the world: " I’m not going to play it for no reason. If Taylor Swift wants to come over and suck my dick, I’ll play it for her" Classy all the way to prison.

We know you've been patiently awaiting the premiere. So, to hold you over until midnight, here is a trailer for The Avengers made-for-TV-movie (circa 1978) in which the teams of earth’s mightiest heroes fight their arch nemesis, Loki, and the terribly threatening rock band KISS.

Check out Tony Stark’s epic mustache:

Want to Look Good at Our Party? Here's How to Ride a Mechanical Bull

Come party with us Friday night. But first, watch this video.

Posted By on Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 10:43 PM

By now you should know about our Source staff Urban Cowboy party at Maverick's this Friday. It's going to be radical. The forecast is calling for drunkeness. In fact, one staffer (who may have been inebriated at the time) claims there is "no one in this bike-happy town who can drink as much bourbon as me." Come on out and prove he/she wrong.

Anyway, if your curious how to excel at mechanical bull riding, here are some pointers from a professional. Seriously. Apparently there are professional mechanical bull riders.

You need to use a flashplayer enabled browser in order to view this video

HA! He wears a glove to prevent blisters...Wuss.

Also, don't think we're endorsing this D-bag. He says that "for some reason" women are better at bull riding. No shit? Women are good at something? Thanks, redneck.

And, for a laugh, check out this video of bull riding gone wrong. Fast forward to 1:50 into the video.

You need to use a flashplayer enabled browser in order to view this video

Anyway, maybe these videos will help you get your timing down for Friday night's showdown (8pm!). If you haven't registered for the bull riding comp, do so now! It's free at but we only have 20 spots open and they're filling fast.

Also! Music from Boxcar Stringband and Harley Bourbon at 10pm, drink specials and beers with us! This is a no brainer! We'll see y'all there.

Getting Ugly with the Source: A photographic review of Friday's party

Lots of terrible looking holiday attire here.

Posted By on Tue, Dec 13, 2011 at 10:06 PM

Friday night the Astro Lounge hosted our seasonal "Reader Appreciation Ugly Sweater/Holiday Garb Party." Drinks were consumed, good times were had and those not in attendance were ridiculed. See below for photographic evidence of this.

Mike and James, stories filed, head out the Source's doors and into the night...

MadHappy Lounge Moving Out of Downtown

The MadHappy Lounge, one of Bend's most popular night spots, is moving.

Posted By on Thu, Sep 1, 2011 at 11:53 PM

Tonight, Matt Hopper and the Roman Candles are playing at the MadHappy Lounge on Brooks St. in downtown Bend. This is interesting in and of itself -- a very cool band in a cool place -- but the sad thing is that this could very well be the last show at the MadHappy's downtown location.

According to the popular dance spot's bartender/marketing manager, the MadHappy is moving into the Innovation Theatre Works space off of Reed Market Road at the south end of Bend. The MadHappy will operate more as an art collective and other details about the move aren't yet known -- including when they'll actually close down the Brooks St. spot, which was previously the home of the Bendistillery Martini Bar.

For Bend's nightlife contingent, this is a major bummer, especially considering the awesome slate of shows that have been rolling through the MadHappy as of late. Also, this has always been a reliable middle-of-the-week party spot, thanks to the constant innovation from owner Reggie Martinez, who bought the space last spring.

But knowing Martinez, you shouldn't expect the MadHappy crew to be quiet for long. We'll keep you posted on their move.

Astro Reopens at New Location - Tonight

The new Astro Lounge is bigger, shinier and has a patio.

Posted By on Fri, Jul 22, 2011 at 2:42 PM

Looking for something to do this Friday night?

One of Bend's favorite spots to find a make-out partner is reopening this evening (July 22), says owner Josh Maquet, who has had to do most of the finish work himself in order to speed things along at his new Bond St. space (939 Bond St., briefly occupied by Subway, is a good up-trade for the Astro with the chain sub-shop now gone from downtown).

Thursday, Maquet offered the Source an exclusive private tour of the new and improved space.

Folks will immediately notice the difference in size at the new Astro Lounge. Maquet went from a 45-person occupancy building  (which was often compromised) to the ability to entertain 90 cocktail shwillers at once. And with a back door that opens to a large, furnished concrete patio (situated on the same alley as the D&D's back door), Maquet expects more flow in his bar, rather than the camping out that tended to occur at his Minnesota Ave. location.

The new joint looks classy. Exposed older-than-your-parents brick walls, a large bar made from a combo of maple and monkey puzzle tree (seriously) with an unfinished metal wrap, room for live music, several private booths, plenty of table seating and couches mark the highlights at the new location.

Some things haven't changed. Most of the staff made the transfer and much of the local art on the walls will look familiar.

Check it out and let us and Maquet know what you think.

Rocker Jerry Joseph will be the first to play at the new Astro Lounge, with a show set for Thursday, July 28.

You're Invited to Our Party...With Cheap Beer!

The BENT blog launches with a sweet party on Thursday at Velvet.

Posted By on Mon, Mar 21, 2011 at 6:40 PM

Now that I've got your attention with the promise of cheap beer, I would now like to promise you some cheap beer. Not cheap beer, really, but good beer at cheap prices. Got it?

At 7pm on Thursday night at Velvet, we're officially launching the Bent blog with a party for you to meet all our writers and also enjoy some drink specials, including $3 pints of Three Creeks brews and $4 cocktails.

Our staff will be on hand, drinking said drinks and anxiously waiting to meet you, our loyal readers, and get the word out about this very blog. And, we'll also be giving away a massive pile of free CDs, books and other stuff.**

So yeah, consider yourselves invited. 7pm. Thursday, March 24 at Velvet. See you then!

**"Stuff" may include, but is not limited to, the mysterious framed photograph that appeared on my desk two weeks ago. The above pictured party robot, however, will not be up for grabs.

Get Old Timey at Tonight's (not so) Secret Speakeasy Party

Go back to the 1930s tonight at the Speakeasy in Bend.

Posted By on Sat, Mar 12, 2011 at 6:00 PM

OK, I'm not supposed to tell you about this (not true), but there's a secret (it's really not that secret) party going down in Bend tonight.

The Speakeasy, as the party is known, is hosted by Source columnist Columbine Quillen and her fellow party purveyor Erica Reilly and has a Prohibition-era theme to it. Thus, you'll need a secret password to get in. That schnizzle stix.

The party, kicking off at 8pm and going late into the night, is taking place at Top Leaf Mate Shop in Tin Pan Alley (869 NW Tin Pan Alley off of Minnesota Ave) and will feature some authentic pre-Prohibition drinks. You're encouraged to dress in 1930s threads to authenticate the feeling of this shindig.

Also, bring cash. They didn't have credit cards in the 1930s, silly.
