The folks at Chow are gearing up to try their hands at something new soon. Local Slice Pizza is scheduled to open by the last week of April on Amber Meadow Drive off of Brookswood.

With new construction on its way to completion and a liquor license already approved, feel free to let your anticipation build. The Local Slice Facebook Page describes the new venture as “A Locavore Pizza Joint in Bend Oregon showcasing the best of Bend, local beers, and good times!” The menu at Local Slice will include salads, appetizers and, of course pizza, using fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients while continuing to offer an awesome array of gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options.

There will be thirty seats inside with table service, as well as ten patio seats for soaking up summer outside. They will also be offering delivery, which should delight south-town neighbors.

For the past several weeks the Source staff has been making itself busy with the production of this year’s Dining Guide, which you can find on stands the week of April 26. Part of that work includes identifying a short list of candidates for our annual restaurant of the year designation. This year, we’d like to hear what you, readers, have to say. So send us your selection for restaurant of the year. It can be any establishment in Central Oregon that offers a dinner menu and a dinner “experience.” That primarily includes establishments with things like a wine list and table-side service, but past winners include Jackson’s Corner, an order-at-the counter casual dining restaurant. Other winners include, Jen's Garden, Ariana and Trattoria Sbandati.

So send us your fave by commenting below or log on the Source’s Facebook page and vote. The winner will be published in the Dining Guide with a write-up as People’s Choice Award.

Bend-O-Bento wants you to help Japan

Buy bento boxes to help Japan.

Sunday marks the one year anniversary of the massive earthquake that hit northeastern Japan, triggering a devastating tsunami and leading to the meltdown of a nuclear powerplant. About 20,000 people were confirmed killed or are still missing.

It’s been a long year for the survivors.

That’s where you and Bend-O-Bento comes in. The two Japanese gals that opened this shop on Wilson Avenue a few weeks back want you to come in and buy a $10 lunch. They’ll take the cash and send it off for relief efforts in Japan.

It’s really an extension of the mission the two women had when they first got together last year for a Japan relief benefit at Common Table. They ended up feeding 300 people and raising $20,000.

The other common denominator? The food.

Bend-O-Bento’s food isn’t about yakisoba and Kalifornia rolls. You can expect to see a much more authentic take on Japanese fare than any of the other kitchens in town, according to the owners.

We just think it’s a great thing to do with your Sunday.
