Day Wave Opens for The Shins and Becomes Your New Favorite Indie Band

Posted By on Wed, Sep 27, 2017 at 2:00 PM

Ahead of last night’s show at the Athletic Club of Bend, I went to Spotify to listen to The Shins’ opener, Day Wave. I was immediately stoked on the indie dream pop band, the brainchild of Jackson Phillips, who studied at the Berklee School of Music. On his debut album, “The Days We Had,” Phillips played all of the instruments and wrote all of the music and lyrics. Day Wave has a romantic indie rock charm reminiscent of their tour mates, The Shins.

As my best friend and I walked into the venue, Day Wave started their set with the track “Something Here,” which appeals on a universal, emotional level with the lyrics, “There’s something here, oh / And my head feels heavy” Phillips was joined on stage by a full band of musicians, which brought his ethereal yet catchy pop jams to life.

Unlike most opening bands, Day Wave’s performance included a full light show, which added to their appeal, professionalism and stage presence. I love The Shins, and they put on a phenomenal performance last night, but Day Wave held their own and definitely won over new fans with their musicianship, song arrangement and stage presence. While other openers stand in front of covered gear for the headliner (which they had to do as well), Day Wave amped up the performance value with a light show of headliner proportions.

The band has great charisma and really seemed to be having fun together on stage. Each member seemed fully engaged. Phillips’ vocals sounded on point and the sound quality was incredible, especially for an outdoor music venue. As the last concert in the Clear Summer Nights music series, we couldn’t have asked for a better, clear fall evening with two amazing indie rock bands.

I don’t know about you, but Day Wave may be my new favorite dream pop band. I’ll always love The Shins and last night they put on a stellar performance. You could really tell that James Mercer and the rest of the band were having a great time, which always makes a big difference at a show. And the same could be said of Day Wave. If you haven’t already added them into your rotation, do it! “The Days We Had” album sparkles and lands the band comparisons to The Shins, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and a little less electronic-y Passion Pit.

Bend's DJ Raider Mystic drops video for Raider Nation mixtape

Posted By on Fri, Jul 31, 2015 at 10:26 AM

The 2015 NFL season doesn't kick off for more than a month, but the Raider Nation is ready. Bend's own DJ Raider Mystic, who founded the Bend Oregon Raider Nation (BORN) in 2013, recently released a Raider Nation mixtape for the upcoming football season.

Fans of the Oakland Raiders are somewhat notorious. GQ once called them the "fourth worst" football fans in the nation, describing them as "Hell-raisers, gangbangers, and inveterate knife-lickers all of whom firmly believe that skipping town for an away game is well worth the parole violation." The only worse fans: West Virginia University Mountaineers (who?) and Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fans (so much for brotherly love).

But Mystic has said that the fans' enthusiasm is often misconstrued by the media. Check out the video for his mixtape below and make your own decision. The mixtape comes out September 2015.

Tell Us How You Really Feel: The F-Word

Posted By on Fri, Apr 24, 2015 at 11:33 AM

Feminism. It's a word with a rich history, that elicits a broad range of reactions and responses from women and men alike. What does it mean, and who can (and does) lay claim to the label "feminist"?

As we prepare to release our annual Women's Issue next week, we want to know how men feel about the word, the idea, and the label. MUSE Women's Conference recently tackled this question, asking men "Are you a feminist?" and "Who are feminists?" Check out their video below, and take our survey to share your thoughts.

City of Bend Explains Snow Removal Priorities

Posted By on Mon, Dec 8, 2014 at 10:31 AM

Were you among the many Bendites cranky about the accumulation of snow and ice during our first snow of the season? Perhaps you wondered why the snow ploughs never made it down your street. Well, the City has responded via a video released its annual video explaining how it approaches snow removal, what methods it uses, and how it prioritizes which streets to hit first.

City Communications Director Justin Finestone clarified, explaining, "[The video] wasn’t really in response to last month’s snow storm. We produce the same video to run every December with a companion story in our utility bill newsletter."

Check out it and share your thoughts in the comments.

What in the World: Hump Day Video Edition with Weird Al, Jenny Lewis and Jon Stewart

Posted By on Wed, Jul 16, 2014 at 9:50 AM

"Weird Al" Yankovich
(remember him?) is back with a new album, and eight days worth of video releases to support it. Today's video, "Word Crimes," which takes on Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," is an obvious contender for Stuff Journalists Like. But it's also great because it allows us to listen to that catchy melody without feeling dirty.

Jenny Lewis's new music video "Just One of the Guystakes on the patriarchy by channeling both Lisa Frank and drag culture and having pretty actresses take jabs at "biological clocks" and the shame (the shame!) of "ladies without babies." Ciara and Beyoncé tried something soooort of like this, but they were more focused on personal relationships and double standards.

Jon Stewart takes on Hobby Lobby (aka Pipe Cleaner Paradise) and asks where we draw the line for religious exemptions for businesses. How about Pantsless Mondays?

With minimal snow and the Dirksen Derby course still up, Bend's Kirt Voreis and Carson Storch took to the hill for a studded-tire smack down. Local photographer and videographer Pete Alport was on hand to shoot.
Way to make hay, fellas.

Hilarious 6-year-old Voice Dub

Posted By on Thu, Oct 10, 2013 at 5:01 PM

As if the kid's name—Maximus Thor—wasn't cool enough, his Dad has created the most hilarious video series using his friend's voice to dub over his son's talking. The result is a ridiculous series of funny stories told by a grown-up-sounding 6-year-old. Check it out! There are quite a few videos in the series.
