Shakespeare in the Park Comes to Bend

Shakespeare comes to life in Bend this summer with a production of "A Mid Summer Night's Dream" in Drake Park.

It's been in the works for a few months now, but we've finally been able to confirm that there will be a large-scale production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Billy Shakespeare classic, this summer in Drake Park.

The Shakespeare performance will take place between August 26 and 27 and is produced by Lay it Out Events, a sister company to the Source Weekly. The Portland-based Northwest Classic Theater Company will be providing the players for the production.

Tickets are available on March 1 through

New Driving Move: Sidewalks come into play on Portland Avenue

What's with everyone in Bend driving on the sidewalks on Portland Avenue?

Posted By on Mon, Jan 10, 2011 at 5:41 PM

I know getting to class at COCC on time in the morning and evening is important, but what’s with the latest Bend driving phenomena of sidewalk driving?

Here’s how it goes. Around 8 a.m. or 5 p.m., a car heading west on Portland Avenue stops to make a left hand turn onto a side street or into a driveway. The heavy college commute traffic immediately backs up behind the turning driver. But rather than wait for the person turning to get a break in eastbound traffic and make his or her turn, some in the westbound lane decide that by driving with two wheels up on the sidewalk and two in the street that they can get past. They do.

Sidewalk driving on Portland at rush hour isn’t a once in a while thing, it’s a regular occurrence.

Fortunately, no pedestrians have been on the sidewalks in question when the sidewalk driving happens and hopefully there never will be.

If you’re college bound, relax. The longest you might have to wait for someone to turn is, what 30 seconds?

Spork's Next Pop-Up Supper Club This Weekend

Posted By on Thu, Jan 6, 2011 at 7:00 AM

Spork is following up their successful two-day December pop-up restaurant with another pop-up this weekend, January 8 and 9. Basically the same deal as before: Spork will take over Cafe Sintra's space for two nights.

I wrote about Spork's supper club last month, which you can read here. This time the Spork folks are serving five more substantial courses instead of seven small ones.

The menu is as follows:

-House kimchi consomme, fried Willapa Bay oyster, local corn shoots
-Spanish chorizo and jamon broth, toasted farro, Brussels sprouts, bacon, apple

-Pacific blue prawns, jicama, coconut achiote cream

-Bourbon and root beer braised Carlton Farms Oregon pork belly, grit croquetta, shiso

-Apple pie milkshake

Tickets are $44 (includes gratuity) and can be purchased on brown paper tickets.

If you missed the first Spork pop-up supper club, I highly recommend attending. If you attended, you don't need my recommendation. Hell, I'd go just to try the apple pie milkshake.

One last note: after the Spork article ran, we heard that a few people thought Cafe Sintra was closing and Spork was taking over. This is not true -- the owner of Cafe Sintra offered his space for Spork's supper club, as Cafe Sintra does not utilize its space in the evenings. Neighbors working together, one pop-up restaurant at a time.
