The Weekend in Music: Death Cab, Bright Eyes, Decemberists and More

Death Cab For Cutie tonight, Decemberists on Sunday.

Posted By on Fri, May 27, 2011 at 8:33 PM

What is that glowing thing in the sky? Is that the sun? For the moment, yes. The miserable weather we were originally looking at for Memorial Day Weekend has cleared up...just in time for the kick off of the Les Schwab Amphitheater season. Hopefully it stays that way!

We have a big guide to all things to do with outdoor music in this week's paper. Or you can read it right here.

But on top of that, here's a look at some new music from Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes and the Decemberists, all of which play the amphitheater this weekend. Death Cab For Cutie, joined by Bright Eyes and Jenny and Johnny, are tonight at 6pm and tickets are still available.

The Decemberists and opening act Rodrigo y Gabriella play on Sunday at 6pm. There are still tickets for that one, too.

Snowflakes in the Forecast?

Snow in Bend in late May?

Posted By on Tue, May 24, 2011 at 8:13 PM

With Memorial Day approaching, meaning many of you are planning or trying to plan camping trips, outdoor concerts, music festivals, barbecues and other things that would seem appropriate for the beginning of summer, I figured I do you a favor and check out the weather forecast for you.

The weekend is incredibly crappy, but look to the right and see what we've got in store for the next few days.

What are those things on Thursday? Are those snowflakes? On May 26?

So we know that rapture thing was a hoax...but what the hell is going on?

Bend's Prowling Cougar is No More

The cougar spotted around Bend has been captured and killed.

Posted By on Fri, May 13, 2011 at 9:30 PM

Yesterday, a friend sent over this photo that he snapped while walking near Brookswood Blvd.

There was plenty of cause for alarm as a cougar -- likely one cougar -- had been seen throughout the southwest part of Bend and Deschutes River Woods.

But KTVZ is now reporting that a cougar (or the cougar) was captured in DRW after it killed a deer in someone's backyard. The deer's body was then put in a trap, which eventually captured the 120-pound male cougar, which was then euthanized by ODFW officials.

Check out the story, complete with video images.

ONDA Open House Tonight to Announce 700-Mile Trail

ONDA unveils plans for a trail from Bend to the Idaho border.

Posted By on Fri, May 13, 2011 at 7:26 PM

The Oregon Natural Desert Association is holding an open house tonight (5:30pm-9:30pm) at their new location in the Old Mill Marketplace (50 SW Bond St., #4) to make a big announcement.

At the event, ONDA will release details on a planned trail that would begin at the High Desert Museum and extend all the way to the Idaho border. The proposed Oregon Desert Trail would run 700 miles, snaking through southern Oregon before turning north and ending at Lake Owyhee State Park, just south of the city of Ontario.

You can learn more about the plan at tonight's open house, which will feature some excellent music from the equally excellently named local band Truck Stop Gravy, in addition to food and drinks.

Here's a look at the proposed map of the trail.

Two State Senators Push to Raise Oregon's Speed Limit

An amendment to a state senate bill could increase Oregon's speed limit.

Posted By on Thu, May 12, 2011 at 11:11 PM

In a press release sent out today from the offices of Oregon state Senators Jason Atkinson (R-Central Point) and Bruce Starr (R-Hillsboro), the two lawmakers say they want to raise Oregon's speed limit.

They are looking to raise the speed limit on highways and interstates to as high as 75mph for passenger vehicles and 60 for commercial vehicles. The current speed limit on most highways is 55mph and 65mph on interstates, and these relatively low limits (when compared to other states), have long been a source of complaints from Oregonians and out-of-state drivers alike.

Starr and Atkinson plan to achieve the higher limit by amending a bill currently in front of the senate's Business, Transportation and Economic Development committee.

“Oregon is the odd one out when it comes to the nation’s speed limits,” said Starr. “By modernizing our speed limit we can increase the flow of traffic, lower commute times and fast track commerce through the state.”

It will be interesting to see if drivers welcome the higher limits -- should this pass -- given that rolling down at highway at around 80, which would be where plenty of drivers would set their own limit, would make that $4-gallon gas disappear at an even higher rate.

Win Decemberists or Death Cab for Cutie Tickets

Pick up this week's Source Weekly and look for a chance to win tickets to these shows.

Posted By on Thu, May 12, 2011 at 6:52 PM

If you haven't picked up a copy of this week's print edition of the Source, would recommend doing so, because you could win some tickets to the upcoming Decemberists or Death Cab for Cutie shows.

All you have to do is scour the paper for a hidden lyrics to each of these bands. Once you find them, listen to 92/9FM tomorrow morning and call in, giving the lyrics you found in the paper for a chance to win a pair of tickets to one of these shows -- both of which feature incredible opening acts.

I can't tell you where exactly you'll find the lyrics, so you'll have to just read the whole paper, I guess. Enjoy!

Holy "Sister Christian!" Night Ranger is Still a Band. And They're Coming to Bend!

The hit 80s band, Night Ranger, comes to Bend.

Posted By on Tue, May 10, 2011 at 10:27 PM

If you're wondering what a Night Ranger is, I won't blame you. There's a good chance you're under 35 years old and/or don't hang out in a lot of karaoke bars.

But Night Ranger, the '80s rock band known for their huge hit, Sister Christian, is apparently still touring and are coming to Bend for a free show at Downtown Bend's Troy Field on July 8. That's the big grassy area next to McMenamins.

The show is a listener appreciation show for 98.3FM The Twins. If you're still one of the people who's never heard of Night Ranger, please enjoy the video below. If you're an established NR fan, feel free to blast this throughout your home and/or office.
