Tonight's Music: Pickwick, Polyrhythmics

Check out a free and delightfully soulful show from Pickwick tonight.

Posted By on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 7:22 PM

I'll cut to the chase here: I've been listening to essentially one band for the past two days and that band is called Pickwick. They are a bunch of nerdy-looking Seattle indie rockers who have, seemingly impossibly, decided to play soul music.

And the soul music they play is incredible. More incredible, perhaps, is the fact that they're playing a free show tonight at McMenamins Old St. Francis School.

Here's a video of the band playing "Hacienda Motel" in the studios at KEXP. If this song doesn't make you want to dance...I hate to break it to you, but you're probably a huge jerk. Sorry. But you are. Everybody thinks so. The show is at 7pm and it's freaking free!

If you still want to dance after this relatively early show, get your bad self to the Silver Moon where another Seattle band will be there to get you moving. Polyrhthmics, a horn-equipped Afrofunk band will be in the house with their world-spanning sound. That show is at 9pm.

Here they are in action.

Like Green Day? Try Some Emily's Army Tonight

Emily's Army, featuring the son of Green Day front man Bille Joe Armstrong, plays Bend Oregon.

Posted By on Wed, Jun 22, 2011 at 11:49 PM

We mentioned this in today's paper that is now out on the streets, but there is a band called Emily's Army playing tonight at the Mad Happy Lounge and they're worth checking out.

First of all, the band is made up of Bay Area kids between the ages of 15 and 17 and the drummer, Joey, is the son of Billy Joe Armstrong. Recognize that name? Yeah, he's the lead singer of Green Day. He also produced his son's band's debut album, Don't Be a Dick -- which is actually pretty damn good punk rock.

The band just posted on their blog that while tonight's FREE show is 21 and up (somewhat ironically so) the band is going to play out on the patio for their underage fans before the 9pm indoor show begins.

The Weekend in Music: Death Cab, Bright Eyes, Decemberists and More

Death Cab For Cutie tonight, Decemberists on Sunday.

Posted By on Fri, May 27, 2011 at 8:33 PM

What is that glowing thing in the sky? Is that the sun? For the moment, yes. The miserable weather we were originally looking at for Memorial Day Weekend has cleared up...just in time for the kick off of the Les Schwab Amphitheater season. Hopefully it stays that way!

We have a big guide to all things to do with outdoor music in this week's paper. Or you can read it right here.

But on top of that, here's a look at some new music from Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes and the Decemberists, all of which play the amphitheater this weekend. Death Cab For Cutie, joined by Bright Eyes and Jenny and Johnny, are tonight at 6pm and tickets are still available.

The Decemberists and opening act Rodrigo y Gabriella play on Sunday at 6pm. There are still tickets for that one, too.

G. Love, The Belle Brigade Tonight in Bend

G. Love and Special Sauce hit the Domino Room with special guests The Belle Brigade.

Posted By on Thu, Apr 21, 2011 at 9:38 PM

In this week's paper, there's a great feature on G. Love, who is playing tonight at the Domino Room beginning at 9pm and the last time I checked, there were still tickets available.

The 9pm show is on a tour of G. Love dates supporting his newly released disc, Fixin' To Die, the first record on which G. Love plays without Special Sauce -- the backing band he'll have with him tonight. But the record is a delight, partially because it was produced by The Avett Brothers, giving it more twang and blues than the hip-hop edge we've come to expect from Mr. Love.

G. Love will be doing an on-air interview soon here at 92.9FM so tune in or listen online.

Also appearing tonight is a super cool opening act out of Los Angeles called The Belle Brigade fronted by the brother and sister combo of Barbara and Ethan Gruska. The siblings just happen to be the kids of singer-songwriter Jay Gruska and the grandchildren of legendary film score composer John Williams. Not a bad musical pedigree.

I'd enjoyed their new self-titled album, but got a real taste for them the other night on Jimmy Kimmel, when they played this song:

Yonder Mountain String Band Tonight in Bend

YMSB brings its creative bluegrass to Bend tonight.

Posted By on Wed, Apr 13, 2011 at 6:40 PM

Today has been circled on the calendars of a few hundred (or several hundred) of Bend's live music fans. The wait is over and roots music fans can finally rejoice because Yonder Mountain String Band is in town tonight at the Midtown Ballroom.

If you've seen YMSB's high-energy Americana show in Bend before, you know that people here get down to this Colorado quartet. Like, really, really get down. I can't say for certain, but expect some hula hooping up in the joint tonight.

There are still tickets available, according to the promoter. Bendticket.com is selling advance will-call-only tickets until 3:30pm today. After that, check Ranch Records.

The show is at 9pm. And it's all ages.

Everything You Need to Know About New Year's Eve in Bend

A guide to New Year's Eve in Bend, Oregon.

Posted By on Fri, Dec 31, 2010 at 4:46 PM

If you haven't seen it already, we included pretty much everything going on in town on our Picks page this week.

Go ahead and read that right here.

But here are a few of my picks for tonight's festivities in no particular order:

New Year's Eve at Old St. Francis School

We’ve said it several times, but McMenamins has long been the go-to spot for most celebratory holidays, including New Year’s Eve. You can go big and purchase a lodging package, which will get you in to see Moon Mountain Ramblers, but everyone can join in on Jukebot’s rock and roll dance party in the Father Luke’s room for free. 9pm. 21 and over. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Larry And His Flask New Year’s Eve Bash

It’s Larry and His Flask – again! But this time the much loved self-described “hillbilly jamboree” is providing a rare intimate show for its loyal local fans at the newly named Old Mill Music Lounge above Level 2. Opening the show is Nashville’s Barefoot Surrender, as well as Portland’s Ether Circus and McDougall. 21 and up. $7/door and bendticket.com. 8pm. Old Mill Music Lounge, 360 SW Powerhouse Dr.

Messages Through Music: Slipmat Science NYE Party

When we say this is probably the biggest NYE party in Central Oregon, we mean it. This eclectic gathering of musicians allows revelers into three different venues in the Midtown complex for hip-hop, electronica, dub, drum and bass – in addition to a room with four live bands. The list of DJs and other musicians appearing at this party includes Top Shelf, Mindscape, Eternal (with DJ Harlo), Brad Jones, Defect, Rada, and plenty of other artists. Midtown, Domino Room, Annex, 51 NW Greenwood Ave. $10/before 10pm, $15/after 10pm.
