Video of The Shins in Bend

The Shins play a small club gig with a new lineup to prepare for Outside Lands.

Posted By on Wed, Aug 10, 2011 at 6:53 AM

I just got home a bit ago from a very sold-out appearance by The Shins at the Domino Room here in Bend and I'm pleased to say that this rehashed version of the band far exceeded my expectations.

In fact, James Mercer and crew -- cheered on by an incredibly appreciative audience -- looked to be in rare form with an hour-and-a-half-long set that included plenty of hits from the old days as well as a couple new tunes. These small-venue Oregon shows the band is playing were said to be warm up gigs for their appearance at Outside Lands, but as far as I could tell, they've already ironed out most of the kinks that typically come from a new lineup.

Here's a quick video from the show, in case you were one of the many, many people who weren't able to get into this (almost) surprise gig.

Video from Thursday Night's G. Love Show

What you missed if you texted your way through the G. Love and Special Sauce show last night.

Posted By on Fri, Apr 22, 2011 at 10:08 PM

Dear guy in front of me at last night's G. Love and Special Sauce/Belle Brigade show,

I've posted some videos on this site for you to check out because, as far as I can tell, you didn't see much, if any, of the show at a sold-out Domino Room last night because you were texting throughout the whole show, only taking a break between songs to backpedal into me and shout either "Git er done!" or "Uh, winning!" toward the ceiling.

I don't mind the inadvertent drunken body contact. The place was packed, as was your gut with cheap beer, so no worries there. And it's a rock show -- do whatever you want to do, right?

But seriously, the "winning" stuff has to stop. And the "git 'er done" thing ended a couple years ago. Also, the finger whistling is generally frowned upon, too. I doubt G. Love, while ripping through a set that included the best of G. Love's classics as well as cuts from his new record, was all that impressed by your whistling.

And if you were there for the promising pop rock of the Belle Brigade, I hope you enjoyed it. It looked like everyone was having a good time in the packed-to-capacity venue. I know I was, and so was the rest of our staff who made it out.

OK, here's the video!

Winningly,

Mike

Video from the Weekend: ESO, Larry and His Flask, Mosley Wotta

A roundup of Saturday's outdoor free music events.

Posted By on Mon, Apr 18, 2011 at 11:45 PM

When I left the house around noon on Saturday afternoon and looked up at the menacing gray clouds overhead, I said something like, "Ohhh boy, I hope it doesn't rain?"

Anyway, it didn't rain, which was good, because I saw outdoor live music featuring three of our region's best acts, in April, in Bend, all freaking day. First, was Empty Space Orchestra's Record Store Day performance down in the alley behind Ranch Records. About 150 people (maybe more, maybe less...I'm not a scientist) turned out for an excellently tight set featuring some cuts from the instrumental space rock band's forthcoming self-titled record. Here's some video evidence:

Next, it was up to Northwest Crossing for a back-to-back bill that included Larry and His Flask and Mosley Wotta at the Spring Festival. LAHF was as outrageous as ever, getting the eclectic crowd of festival goers moving in no time. BUT, at one point drummer Jamin Marshall said something along the lines of "A critic from the Source said that Central Oregon is sick of seeing Larry and His Flask and Mosley Wotta."

The crowd responded with a resounding boo, but I was like "WTF?"

So yeah, I didn't write that, Twitter it, Facebook it, fax it to my neighbors. Nor did anyone at the paper. I told Jamin that after the show, and he felt bad and apologized. We high-fived and all was well. No worries, but for the record the Source does not hate LAHF or Mosley Wotta. And that's because they play incredible live shows, like you'll see below.

A Video Taste of the Mt. Bachelor Powder

Video of one of Mt. Bachelor's sickest powder day in years.

If you're one of the folks who haven't been up Mt. Bachelor in the past week, well...it's been pretty insane. Take a look at this awesome video of powder, courtesy of Hola! restaurants.
