Celebrate 4/20 By Watching Out for Grow Operations, Authorities Say

Keep an eye out for pot farms on your next hike.

Outdoor Marijuana Grows Bend Oregon

While some of Central Oregon's population is for some reason celebrating today (with it being April 20 and all), our area's drug enforcement officials are taking a different tact for this year's de facto pot holiday.

The Central Oregon Drug Enforcement released a statement late yesterday -- 4/20 Eve, as it's known to some -- asking the regions' residents to keep a vigilant eye out for marijuana grow operations on public lands, which the multi-agency group says has been a problem in recent years.

"The Central Oregon Drug Enforcement team believes that the drug trafficking organizations involved in the illegal growing of outdoor marijuana will start their plantations early this spring," said the statement.

In the past, the agency has found evidence of trafficking cartels using our nearby public lands to grow pot.

CODE is asking people to be aware of "large amounts of plastic irrigation pipe, large quantities of fertilizer in bags, propane tanks and anything else that looks out of place in the outdoors" when they head out onto public lands. They don't, however, want you to go all Johnny Justice on them while trying to gather information and put yourself in danger. It's always important to stay safe when pot farm hunting.

Will Ferrell is on "The Office" Tonight!

Mr. Funnypants himself, Will Ferrell, is on The Office tonight.

Posted By on Thu, Apr 14, 2011 at 11:49 PM

As I believe I've mentioned a few times on this blog: I freakin' love The Office. A lot. Like, more than a friend. And I'm not one of those "it used to be funny but not anymore" sort of people -- I still am very much infatuated with Michael Scott and company.

For example, one time I got to chat with Rainn Wilson (Dwight Shrute) and it basically made my life.

And tonight, Mr. Will Ferrell is joining the cast, playing Michael's replacement (Steve Carell is leaving the show at the end of this season). It doesn't look like Ferrel will be around next season, but his character will indeed be featured on several episodes this spring. So yeah, check it out at 9pm tonight on NBC.

Indictment Made in Fatal Third Street Hit and Run

Brett Lee Biedscheid has been indicted for the hit-and-run death in Bend.

Posted By on Tue, Apr 12, 2011 at 11:54 PM

Deschutes County District Attorney Patrick Flaherty announced today that Brett Lee Biedscheid has been indicted for the hit-and-run death of pedestrian Anthony Martin back in late January.

Biedscheid has long been referenced as a person of interest in the case, but was officially indicted by a grand jury today on suspicion of criminal negligent homicide and "failure to perform the duties of a driver when a person is killed," according to a press release from Flaherty's office.

Martin was killed on January 26 when he was struck by a vehicle while reportedly walking his bicycle across Third Street in Bend.

Flaherty said the grand jury made the decision after reviewing video tapes and documents and hearing testimony from law enforcement agents and witnesses.

Biedscheid is set to be arraigned at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Trooper Stops to Help Motorist, Ends up Delivering Baby

A fish and wildlife trooper gets more than he bargained for on the side of the road.

Posted By on Tue, Apr 12, 2011 at 7:24 PM

An Oregon fish and wildlife trooper got a little more than he planned for on Monday morning when he stopped on Highway 199 near Selma to help what he thought was a motorist having car trouble.

Instead, the trooper, Dan Stinnett, found two women in the car -- one frantically trying to call 911 to tell them that the other woman was ready to deliver a baby.

Stinnett found the baby girl's head already half way out and within three minutes had helped deliver the baby.

"When the baby took her first breath, I took my first breath too," said Stinnett.

An ambulance soon arrived and took the new mother, a 32-year-old woman from Brookings who asked not to have her name released, and her baby to a hospital.

Talk about roadside assistance, eh?

Pink Martini, Dierks Bentley Added to Les Schwab Amphitheater Schedule

Pink Martini, Deirks Bentley, Allison Krauss

Posted By on Mon, Apr 11, 2011 at 9:54 PM

The Les Schwab Amphitheater announced today two -- well actually, three -- more additions to the summer concert schedule.

Pink Martini is scheduled to play on July 23, while Dierks Bentley will appear on August 10.

The LSA also officially announced today that Allison Krauss and Union Station are playing, too. But we told you all about that last week.

This marks the third appearance by Pink Martini in the past five years at the LSA, and the 13-member (or more) world-spanning orchestral group stops in Bend during a busy summer that also finds them playing the Sasquatch Music Festival.

Country rocker Dierks Bentley is making his first appearance at the amphitheater, filling the big-name country music slot the venue typically books each summer.

Phish Playing the Gorge August 5 and 6

Phish announces some West Coast tour details.

Posted By on Mon, Apr 11, 2011 at 5:48 PM

Phish Gorge Amphitheater
  • Phish Gorge Amphitheater
All those Phishheads out there saying things along the lines of "Hey, what's up with the band giving the cold shoulder to the West Coast for the past couple of years?" can relax this morning, after the band announced a pair of shows at the Gorge Amphitheater for August 5 and 6.

The legendary jammers played a weekend at the Gorge back in 2009, I wrote about that here.

Phish also announced some other shows that Oregonians can make an easy trip to, including two nights in Lake Tahoe (August 9 and 10) and an appearance at the Outside Lands music festival.

For tickets to these shows, take a look here for some semi-complicated news on advance sales.

Goodbye Glenn Beck, Says Jon Stewart...Hilarious

Jon Stewart dons his fake glasses and pays tribute to Glenn Beck's departure.

Posted By on Fri, Apr 8, 2011 at 7:04 PM

As you may have heard, Fox News television personality/conspiracy theorist Glenn Beck is leaving the network soon. If you hadn't heard that, let me give you a moment to let that news settle.

OK, good. Last night, Jon Stewart bid farewell to Beck with this tribute...and it's excellently funny. And only slightly crazier than the real thing.

This Weekend's Music Lineup

Live music for the weekend of 4/1-4/3.

Posted By on Fri, Apr 1, 2011 at 11:47 PM

What to do this weekend... Well, first off, get outside because by tomorrow, it's going to be crappy again.

But tonight, here are a couple options after the Art Walk.

I'd recommend squeezing into the MadHappy Lounge where Jay Tablet is having his big ol' CD release part. The record is awesome, by the way. The music is free and starts at 9pm, but get there by 7pm for a BBQ dinner. 21 and up.

Over at the Domino Room, there's some fantastic reggae, if that's your thing, with Jahdan Blakkamoore, Jah Sun, and the Redemption Band. MC Mystic is also on hand.

On Saturday, there's plenty to do, but I'd suggest getting down to the Silver Moon for The Quick & Easy Boys. They're funky, they're rocky and they are downright awesome. Show is at 9pm and it's $7.

There's plenty of other stuff to see, like I said, so check out our live music calendar.

UPDATE: Looks like the Blakkamoore show was canceled.
