New Music Video for Culver City Dub Collective by Bend's Rage Films

A new music video by Culver City Dub Collective, directed by Rage Films' Sky Pinnick.

Posted By on Thu, Mar 31, 2011 at 5:32 PM

Here's a fun little local music fact: Franchot Tone, the singer songwriter who's recently started playing around town with his own band, is also a member of the popular SoCal reggae band Culver City Dub Collective.

The band recently shot this music video, directed by Rage Films' Sky Pinnick, showing the band enjoying the sunshine of Venice Beach and other hip L.A. locales. And here it is:

Les Schwab Concerts Drive Summer Spending in Bend

Posted By on Fri, Feb 25, 2011 at 3:17 AM

The 26,000-plus fans that attended the Les Schwab Summer Concert Series shows last year spent roughly $3.6 million on dining, lodging and entertainment, according to a recently completed study commissioned by Visit Bend. The study quantifies what many people have long sensed: That the LSA Summer Concert Series big-name acts draw a significant number of out-of-town visitors who stay and play in Central Oregon because of the music. According to a summary of the findings, about 39 percent of concert goers come from outside of the region. On average, out-of-state concertgoers spent more than two nights in Central Oregon during their visit. Most of them, 71 percent, stayed in Bend hotels, motels and resorts.

“The Les Schwab Amphitheater is one of the unsung heroes of Bend’s tourism industry,” said Visit Bend CEO Doug LaPlaca, in a press release. “While other events receive more attention and generate more headlines, there are none that draw as many out-of-town visitors as the concerts at the Les Schwab Amphitheater.”

Last Band Standing Returns for 2011

Last Band Standing comes back for a second year, and now it's free.

Posted By on Thu, Feb 24, 2011 at 7:51 PM

After a successful inaugural year, Last Band Standing is returning for a second addition of the local battle of the bands. Last year more than 100 local bands and solo artists applied for the competition and after all was said and done, Mosley Wotta walked away with the top prize.

There's a few changes this year in that the competition, which is produced by Combined Communications, is moving to the Century Center, which as far as I'm concerned, is one of Bend's best indoor music spots and seems like a perfect fit for this eclectic music event. Also, the event is now free. You'll be able to pick up free tickets and your voting ballot at the show's sponsor businesses.

If you're a band looking to compete for more than $30,000 in prizes (including a record label offer and recording time), applications open on March 21, so get your demos ready. As of now, the competition is planning on taking 32 bands.

Opening rounds begin on May 6 and the contest finishes on July 8.

UPDATE: Check http://www.clear1017.fm/ on March 21 for information on how to apply.

Mosley Wotta to Play at the Sundance Film Festival

Mosley Wotta is booked to play the Sundance Film Festival.

Posted By on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 7:32 PM

That's right, Bend's own Mosley Wotta is playing at the iconic Sundance Film Festival on Friday night, marking the band's biggest out-of-town gig to date.

The show was sort of a last-minute booking for the hip-hop band, thanks to their locally based booking company, In the Pocket Artists. After a Thursday night gig with Empty Space Orchestra at Portland's Doug Fir Lounge, the band is hitting the road to get out to Park City, Utah to play a late-night show at the film festival.

We'll keep you updated on how the show went and perhaps get some photos from MoWo and crew.

Kayo's Lounge Gets a 1950s Makeover with the Marilyn Room

Kayo's lounge is now the Marilyn Room.

Posted By on Wed, Jan 19, 2011 at 10:20 PM

Kayo's Dinner House, the longtime Bend eatery that moved to Third Street last year, has rebranded its lounge, which is now known as The Marilyn Room.

The lounge, which will be hosting live music on most Friday and Saturday nights, is decorated with Marilyn Monroe paraphernalia from the late 1950s/early 1960s. Hence the name, The Marilyn Room.

The venue is open, with happy hour specials on drinks and food, and features JZ Band and Anastacia on Friday night and Franchot Tone on Saturday night. Both of those shows begin at 7:30pm.

And here's perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the Marilyn Room -- every 13th drink poured is free.

Posted By on Thu, Dec 30, 2010 at 12:06 AM

If you haven't already picked on up, the new issue of the Source Weekly is full of Top Ten lists because, well, it's the end of the year and lists are fun, interesting and excellent for newspaper people who like to see their families over Christmas.

In the music section, I solicited a list from Kris, the afternoon DJ at 92/9 FM, of her favorite albums of 2010. And here's that list.

1.  Band of Horses - Infinite Arms

2.  Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record

3.  Menomena - Friend Or Foe

4.  Against Me - White Crosses

5.  The Black Angels - Phosphene Dream

Mosley Wotta and Eric Tollefson Invite You to Their Winter Wonderland

Mosley Wotta and Eric Tollefson's video hilarity to get you to the Soulstice Jubilee.

Posted By on Sat, Dec 11, 2010 at 5:47 AM

It's still a week out, but two local music powerhouses, Mosley Wotta and Eric Tollefson, are already getting the word out about their Soulstice Jubilee show on Saturday, December 18 at the Century Center. And they're doing so in the form of this weirdly hilarious video.

You need to use a flashplayer enabled browser in order to view this video

Tickets are already on sale for the Soulstice Jubilee which will feature both MoWo's full band as well as Eric Tollefson and the World's Greatest Lovers.

A portion of the proceeds from this show go to the KIDS Center, a child-abuse prevention organization based here in Central Oregon.

Blonde Redhead got super loud at the Roseland Theater last Saturday

Posted By on Mon, Nov 22, 2010 at 7:38 PM

This past Saturday I headed down to our rainy sister city to check out Blonde Redhead at the Roseland Theater. I've been a fan of the New York-based trio for a while but wasn't expecting the intense show the band put on.

Judging from their nearly two decades worth of albums, which highlight lead singer Kazu Makino's breathy, ethereal vocals, I was expecting more of what my friend called "sad lesbian music" - which I love. But instead the band put on one of the loudest shows I've heard in a while.

Makino also came onstage in a Star Wars-esque mask, and since she's super hot I'm pretty sure every trekkie in the audience got a boner. I personally thought of Diva Plavalaguna from the Fifth Element (If you don't know the reference look it up, and watch the movie while you're at it - Bruce Willis at his finest).

Below is Blonde Redhead performing Dr. Strangeluv.

Sasquatch! Music Festival Announces 2011 Dates, Foo Fighters to Headline

Sasquatch! Music Festival is slated for May 27-30, 2011.

Posted By on Thu, Nov 18, 2010 at 7:56 PM

Winter really hasn't even begun, yet the summer music festival announcements have already begun. Yesterday we got the dates for Bonnaroo and today I opened my inbox to find that Sasquatch! already has its days lined up. And a headliner.

The festival, now in its 10th year at the Gorge Amphitheater, is slated for Memorial Day weekend (May 27-30) 2011 and this year includes a new Friday night event which will be headlined by Foo Fighters.

Tickets will go on sale at a discounted price on Saturday and the fest has answered one of the main gripes fans had with last year's event by offering a package that includes a camping pass.

I covered Sasquatch! this year and would call it one of my all-time favorite festivals...even though the weather was largely sucky and I got bit by a spider.

Larry and His Flask to Tour with Streetlight Manifesto

Central Oregon's Larry and His Flask end up on another national tour.

Posted By on Thu, Nov 18, 2010 at 5:47 PM

As if 2010 wasn't good enough to Redmond's Larry and His Flask, 2011 is looking just as exciting. Yesterday the band announced that they'd be touring this spring with Streetlight Manifesto, the New Jersey punk and ska outfit that has a loyal and sizable following.

The tour kicks off in February in Pomona, Calif., with LAHF staying on the tour through mid-March and all the way to Washington, D.C., playing mid-sized clubs and theaters along the way. Here's the band's tour schedule.

Also, we noticed that LAHF has a show listed for December 3 at the Century Center. Keep an eye on our calendar for more info on that.
