Don't Miss The Ascetic Junkies At Silver Moon

Portland's, The Ascetic Junkies return to Bend with some new music to share and promising some cool covers. Bend's Chris Beland opens.

Posted By on Fri, Dec 2, 2011 at 5:12 PM

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the talented (and now married) Matt & Kali in Bend Oregon… but that’s all going to change tonight at Silver Moon Tap Room! If you’ve missed past coverage of The Ascetic Junkies, well… you must have been hidden under a rock. From their 2010 album This Cage Has No Bottom, to the new music they are creating (and are sure to share with us tonight), most people just can’t get enough of their unique folk/rock/pop/dance goodness. The best part about this upcoming set is that they are returning to the familiar confines of Silver Moon, always a fantastic place for a sweaty dance party. Kali, guarantees a good time and that they will “pull some cover songs out of left field” (which is always a treat from them). Though sure to be one of the best live shows in Bend over the course of the last few months, it will be bittersweet as the group’s ultra talented and super animated banjo player Graham Houser, is in the midst of playing his final shows with The Junkies, as he and his wife will be moving to Argentina in the near future. If you’ve seen past shows, you know just how much this guy adds to an AJ’s performance and how much this band relies on his core contributions to their songwriting. So, don’t miss this chance to not only see The Ascetic Junkies for either the first time or perhaps the 10th time, but also, to send Graham off with a bang!
Opening the show will be Bend's favorite son, Chris Beland. He's been writing a ton of new stuff lately even noting that...
"a back injury earlier this year that led to bed rest, helped me learn 3 new tunings and resulted in 13 new songs. I feel I am finally where I want to be as a songwriter."
So be sure to get their early to catch Chris's set!
Show: 9pm
$10 at the door.

This Weekend's Music Lineup

Live music for the weekend of 4/1-4/3.

Posted By on Fri, Apr 1, 2011 at 11:47 PM

What to do this weekend... Well, first off, get outside because by tomorrow, it's going to be crappy again.

But tonight, here are a couple options after the Art Walk.

I'd recommend squeezing into the MadHappy Lounge where Jay Tablet is having his big ol' CD release part. The record is awesome, by the way. The music is free and starts at 9pm, but get there by 7pm for a BBQ dinner. 21 and up.

Over at the Domino Room, there's some fantastic reggae, if that's your thing, with Jahdan Blakkamoore, Jah Sun, and the Redemption Band. MC Mystic is also on hand.

On Saturday, there's plenty to do, but I'd suggest getting down to the Silver Moon for The Quick & Easy Boys. They're funky, they're rocky and they are downright awesome. Show is at 9pm and it's $7.

There's plenty of other stuff to see, like I said, so check out our live music calendar.

UPDATE: Looks like the Blakkamoore show was canceled.

Come to Our Party...and then go see Galactic

The Bent Blog is celebrating tonight at Velvet, then heading over to see Galactic.

As you may already know, this blog is hosting a party tonight and it's gonna be suhweeet.

We're giving away free CDs and books and at least one T-shirt. All you have to do is show up at Velvet tonight between 7pm and 10pm and you can help yourself to free stuff (But don't be a jerk about it take all the CDs and run out the door laughing).

You can also get $3 Three Creeks beers and $4 specialty cocktails. Why? Because we love our readers, that's why.

After the party, there's a strong contingent of folks heading over to the Domino Room for Galactic's big ol' dance party. We didn't ask the band or anything, but I'm going to go ahead and say that the Bent party is now the officially unofficial Galactic Pre Party.

That show kicks off at 9pm with a set from DJ Smoke, followed by Galactic's headlining gig.

Gonzo, the Source's party robot (pictured above) sadly won't be attending the party. He's in the shop getting his tequila dispenser repaired.

Larry and His Flask are Playing The Warped Tour! And tonight's WinterFringe

Redmond's own Larry and His Flask are set to play the Van's Warped Tour.

Larry and his Flask Warped Tour

I got an e-mail announcing the lineup for the Van's Warped Tour and as I was scrolling through the lineup, I was all like, "Holy crap, our own Larry and His Flask are playing the Warped Tour!"

The hillbilly acoustic rockers will be featured on the entire tour, which runs from late June to mid August across the country and Canada. I was once an annual Warped Tour attendee, but haven't checked it out for a good nine or so years, so a lot of the bands on the lineup are a bit foreign to my punk-starved ears, but it's safe to say that this is one of the biggest steps in this Redmond-based band's career.

If you want to congratulate the guys in person, you can see them tonight at WinterFringe where they'll be playing for free on the street in downtown Bend at 7 p.m. and then up at the Century Center at 9 p.m., along with Mosley Wotta. That show is included in your WinterFest button privileges and buttons will be for sale at the door.

Tonight's Ky-Mani Marley Show Canceled

Posted By on Wed, Feb 16, 2011 at 12:13 AM

If you haven't noticed, today's snow has just about ruined everything, from the school day to the Source production schedule (we're currently crammed in a staffer's living room trying to make a newspaper without the aid of our office or its electricity).

Add another thing to the list of things ruined by the storm tonight's Ky-Mani Marley show. The Tower just let us know that the show is canceled. Bummer.

The Tower says they had no control over the decision and tickets can be exchanged for another show or refunded.

Conspirator and Break Science Tonight at Silver Moon

Two touring live electronic acts play tonight at Silver Moon.

Posted By on Thu, Feb 10, 2011 at 5:48 PM

In another last-minute booking of a national touring act, Silver Moon is bringing electro jammers Conspirator (featuring members of the Disco Biscuits) and live drum/programming act Break Science in for a groove-athon tonight.

The show is at 9pm and the cover is $15.

Conspirator is based out of Philadelphia and is comprised of Disco Biscuits members Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner, as well as Chris Michetti of the band RAQ. Live, they stew together a fiery mix of electronic and jam band sounds. I could continue describing what they do, but you might as well watch this video.

Also on the bill is Break Science, an electro duo that features Adam Deitch on the drums. Deitch, if you've never heard him, is one of the finest and most dynamic drummers you'll hear. He's performed with John Scofield and plenty others, and is a solid producer who has worked with an array of hip-hop artists, including Jurassic 5, 50 Cent and frickin' Justin Timberlake.

Dawes Tonight in Bend, with Jonny Corndawg

Dawes comes to Bend, just for you.

Posted By on Tue, Jan 25, 2011 at 10:41 PM

Perhaps the coolest show of this young 2011 is tonight's gig by folky Americana rockers Dawes at the Silver Moon.

The Los Angeles band first played Bend back in May of 2010 when they opened a Les Schwab Amphitheater show for Band of Horses and She & Him, but are here headlining what I'm hoping will be a packed Silver Moon taproom tonight. The show begins at 9pm and is a mere $7.

Opening for Dawes is Jonny Corndawg, whose name is about 20 times sillier than the cool alt-country songs he plays.

Here's Dawes at Bonnaroo last year.

One Man Band: Boy Eats Drum Machine Opens for Empty Space Orchestra Tonight

Boy Eats Drum Machine

Posted By on Fri, Jan 21, 2011 at 10:16 PM

Tonight, Empty Space Orchestra enters its third straight week of Friday night shows at the Silver Moon and like the other nights, this show features another rad opener in Boy Eats Drum Machine.

This Portland-based band is comprised solely of Jon Ragel, who spins the turntables, hits  the drums, shreds the guitar and uses other instruments to get the crowd dancing. Don't get how this works? Take a look at the video below.

The show is at 9pm and is $7 at the door.

Hear the Songs of the Rolling Stones Tonight in Bend

More than 15 local musicians come together to cover the Rolling Stones.

Are you a Stones fan? Yeah, thought you might be. Well, you're in luck because once again the Tart Bistro lobby will be transformed tonight into a music venue for another edition of "Night Under the Covers," an ongoing local music showcase featuring covers of the work of one particular artist.

The show starts tonight around 5pm and runs until around 9pm. Here's a link to the Facebook invite.

And this month, the featured band is the Rolling Stones. The show is hosted by Last Comic Standing winner Jim Mortenson and will include the musical stylings of Anastacia Beth Scott with Joe Leonardi, No Trace, Poor Man's Roses, the Quons and several of other local acts.

All in all, you'll hear more than 30 Rolling Stones' songs. Hopefully, some of those tracks originate from Exile on Main Street -- because I love that record.

Pagan Jug Band Tonight at McMenamins

The Portland old-time band continues its three-night run of free shows.

Posted By on Thu, Jan 6, 2011 at 11:49 PM

For the second straight night, Pagan Jug Band, a Portland-based old timey jug band (duh) is playing at McMenamins Old St. Francis School. And like last night, the show is free.

The band has been in existence for a while now, playing around the Northwest since 1993 and making appearances at festivals in the region, including Pickathon.

  • Pagan Jug Band

The Pagan Jug Band sound is quintessentially old-timey -- focused on bluegrass, but touching on other styles, including an excellent take on zydeco tunes with an excellent deep Louisiana bayou feel, complete with French lyrics.

If you can't make it out tonight, fret not, because Pagan Jug Band is also playing tomorrow night at McMenamins.

Reverend Horton Heat, Hillstomp Tonight in Bend

The Reverend Horton Heat and Hillstomp play the Domino Room tonight.

Posted By on Wed, Dec 29, 2010 at 6:23 PM

The psychobilly sounds of The Reverend Horton Heat can be heard tonight in Bend, closing off what's been an excellent year in live music here in town.

The legendary Texas punk-influenced act is at the Domino Room and the show begins at 8pm. Opening up is Portland junkyard blues duo Hillstomp, so don't get there late -- those dudes may actually steal the show.

Pitchfork Revolution plays tonight at the Silver Moon Brewing Co.

Things are going to get mighty quiet in the next three days on the live music front in Bend. Apparently, there's a big holiday or something.

Anyway, before settling down with the family for the weekend, head to the Silver Moon for a bluegrass/Americana jamboree with local all-star pickin'-and-grinning outfit, Pitchfork Revolution.

The band includes Jayson Bowerman, the guitar maker we profiled in last week's issue, and several other notable local players. The show begins at 9pm and is $5. 21 and up.
