Last Band Standing Contestants Announced

The complete list of bands playing the 2011 Last Band Standing.

Posted By on Mon, Apr 18, 2011 at 8:45 PM

Last Band Standing -- the local battle of the bands competition -- is back for another year. This year, the shows have moved over to the Century Center for Friday night shows between May 6 and July 8.

Last year, Mosley Wotta walked away with the top prize, which was valued at more than $30,000.

This year, another 32 bands (more than 50 applied...far less than last year, which brought out more than 100 submissions) are heading into the competition, and while there are definitely some returning bands, including last year's runner up, KleverKill. But there are several acts on the list that I've never heard of, which should be interesting.

All but one of the bands (Shannon Tower Band of out Portland) are from Central Oregon. Here's the complete list. Stay I'll keep you posted when I know which band is playing when.

Posted By on Sat, Apr 16, 2011 at 3:00 PM

The 4 Peaks Music Festival is back on this year and they've returned to their original spot out at Tumalo's Rockin' A Ranch.

The festival, set for July 15 and 16, currently includes Poor Man's Whiskey, New Monsoon, Elephant Revival, Acorn Project and several other rootsy acts. This year's event is on a more intimate scale, so you might want to get tickets soon...especially if you want to save some money.

On April 20, tickets (which include passes to both nights and camping) will increase from $40 to $50. They are onsale now and you can click here to buy yours.

By the way, we're in the middle of putting together a massive Summer Concert Guide for next month, so take a look at that for plenty more information on 4 Peaks and all the other outdoor shows coming our way this summer.

Pink Martini, Dierks Bentley Added to Les Schwab Amphitheater Schedule

Pink Martini, Deirks Bentley, Allison Krauss

Posted By on Mon, Apr 11, 2011 at 9:54 PM

The Les Schwab Amphitheater announced today two -- well actually, three -- more additions to the summer concert schedule.

Pink Martini is scheduled to play on July 23, while Dierks Bentley will appear on August 10.

The LSA also officially announced today that Allison Krauss and Union Station are playing, too. But we told you all about that last week.

This marks the third appearance by Pink Martini in the past five years at the LSA, and the 13-member (or more) world-spanning orchestral group stops in Bend during a busy summer that also finds them playing the Sasquatch Music Festival.

Country rocker Dierks Bentley is making his first appearance at the amphitheater, filling the big-name country music slot the venue typically books each summer.

Phish Playing the Gorge August 5 and 6

Phish announces some West Coast tour details.

Posted By on Mon, Apr 11, 2011 at 5:48 PM

All those Phishheads out there saying things along the lines of "Hey, what's up with the band giving the cold shoulder to the West Coast for the past couple of years?" can relax this morning, after the band announced a pair of shows at the Gorge Amphitheater for August 5 and 6.

The legendary jammers played a weekend at the Gorge back in 2009, I wrote about that here.

Phish also announced some other shows that Oregonians can make an easy trip to, including two nights in Lake Tahoe (August 9 and 10) and an appearance at the Outside Lands music festival.

For tickets to these shows, take a look here for some semi-complicated news on advance sales.

The Decemberists Coming to Bend on May 29, Ween in July

The Decemberists and Ween have been announced for this summer.

Posted By on Mon, Mar 7, 2011 at 7:21 PM

I just got word from the Old Mill District that the Memorial Day Weekend music schedule got a big boost today with the announcement that The Decemberists are playing the Les Schwab Amphitheater on May 29, along with openers Rodrigo y Gabriella.

As you probably already know, the Portland-based Decemberists have been getting a ton of press lately thanks to their incredible new disc, The King is Dead, a pleasant turn back toward the band's rootsy beginnings. If you live in Bend and listen to the radio, you've probably heard "Down By the Water" on a daily basis for the past couple of months. And that's good...the song is rad, and the album has become my early favorite for 2011's best disc.

Joining Colin Meloy and company on stage on May 29 is Rodrigo y Gabriella, a wonderfully unique acoustic guitar duo that jams out wizardly compositions that are closer to rock than classical.

Also, announced today by the Old Mill was that eclectic rock weirdos Ween will be making another return appearance on July 2. More on that later.

Live in Bend on May 27: Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, Jenny and Johnny

Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes and Jenny and Johnny are set to play in Bend, OR on May 27.

Posted By on Tue, Feb 15, 2011 at 7:07 AM

Yes, this is really happening -- Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes and Jenny and Johnny are all playing on one night here in Bend on May 27 at the Les Schwab Amphitheater.

This marks the first concert announcement of the 2011 LSA schedule, and given that all three of these bands are playing the Sasquatch! Music Festival up in Washington that same weekend, I wouldn't be surprised if we get a few more bands appearing at the festival here in Bend. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

Tickets for this show are on sale this weekend at the Ticket Mill in the Old Mill District, so if you're down there for WinterFest this weekend, you can snatch them up at $35/each plus a $3 fee. There's only 300 tickets available at this price, so hustle down there.

Also check out the band websites I linked above for other pre-sale offerings from the bands.

Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside tomorrow at OSU-Cascades

Posted By on Tue, Jan 4, 2011 at 7:00 AM

Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside, one of my favorite bands to come out of Portland lately, is playing a mid-morning gig at the OSU-Cascades Campus Center this Wednesday. I've seen Sallie and the gang a few times now and it's always super fun. Seriously. While the band might look like your average group of Portland hipsters, Ford's voice is straight out of the 40's and the men behind her rock out. Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside is the kind of band that you watch and suddenly realize you need to learn the Charleston. No matter what your mood or dancing abilities, it's hard not to start dancing - even if the show is at 11 a.m.

Empty Space Orchestra Begins Silver Moon Residency This Week

Empty Space Orchestra is playing all month at the Silver Moon.

Posted By on Tue, Jan 4, 2011 at 12:45 AM

Empty Space Orchestra, the Bend-based, prog-rock brain-melting instrumentalists, are setting up camp in the Silver Moon this month for four shows featuring a different opening act each week.

The series begins on Friday and features openers The Dela Project (who are filling in for Grant Sabin). On Thursday, Jan. 13, the band plays with Portland hip-hop cross over act Hurtbird. On Friday, Jan. 21, the one-man dance party Boy Eats Drum Machine is the featured guest. On Friday, Jan. 18, it's X-Ray Press getting things started.

Tickets are available at Bendticket.com -- and if you plan on hitting up all the shows, you can get a four-show pass for a mere $15.

Empty Space Orchestra has been hard at work on its forthcoming full-length album, which is set to drop this spring. Here's a sampling of two tracks from that disc.

The Aggrolites Added to Bend WinterFest Lineup

LA reggae rockers The Aggrolites to appear at Bend Winterfest.

Posted By on Thu, Dec 2, 2010 at 7:45 PM

Just a day after I got word that Lyrics Born would be headlining Saturday Night of the 2011 edition of Bend WinterFest, I just learned that The Aggrolites will be playing on Friday night.

A gritty old-school style reggae band out of Los Angeles, The Aggrolites have played frequently in Bend over the past couple of years, including much-raved-about headlining show at the Domino Room this spring. Although reggae has strayed to the outer regions of my radar, I became an instant fan of the band's latest full-length record, IV.

The band will take the WinterFest stage on Friday night with yet-to-be-announced opening acts.

Lyrics Born to Headline Winterfest in Bend

Funky hip-hop star Lyrics Born to Headline Bend, Oregon's Winterfest.

Posted By on Wed, Dec 1, 2010 at 7:54 PM

Looking out the window, it might be difficult to believe that WinterFest is still two months away, but I just learned that the festival already has the music headliner (or at least one of them) lined up.

Lyrics Born, the Bay-area jazzy/funky/world beat hip hopper is set to play the festival's headlining slot on Saturday, February 19. The vocalist, who combines big dance music sounds with some old-school hip-hop sounds, seems like a nice fit for the big WinterFest crowds to get down to at the outdoor festival.

WinterFest buttons are on sale today for $6 at The Old Mill District, Saving Grace, Newport Avenue Market, Bella Moda, Honey Threads, Helly Hansen and for $5 at OnPoint Community Credit Union.

Here's some footage of Lyrics Born in 2008.
