Re: “Action Plan for Building

"energy used in buildings and homes makes up a whopping 67% of Bend's entire fossil fuel use." This is a shocking number yet I expect it is similar in cities and towns across the US and the world.

That is what led me to found, a user-editable database of 40,000+ green-certified homes and buildings across 100 green certifications such as LEED, Passive House, Living Building Challenge and Zero Energy Ready and ranked by RESNET's Home Energy Rating Score (HERS). Click on a building to view the architects, builders, suppliers and products used to construct these buildings. View where the building ranks in a city/county/state/country based on HERS score or LEED points.

For example, here is the list of homes in Deschutes County (Bend, OR) sorted by HERS.

Re: “The Golden Dumpster: Inside Bend's freegan movement

I would be a little hesitate eating food that was near or in a dumpster. However, if the alternative is to starve than you do what you have to do. If I would have to resort to this, I would rather look through roll off dumpsters in my local area to find things to sell on Ebay and Facebook Market Place and use the money to buy safe food. Just my opinion mind you.

Re: “Is the county applying a morality test to land-use decisions?

Really, Bend commissioners? Could you employees of the local citizenry do some independent research and reading of your own? Put down your glass / bottle of Pinot and actually look at more than one source of scientific, peer reviewed research on cannabis. As a 62 year old grandmother and masters prepared addiction counselor, I am far more concerned by the public health ramifications of alcohol and tobacco use (both heavily subsidized by our government) than I am the judicious and regulated offering of cannabis products to adults. Lets not turn the study of this issue into yet another example of the head-in-the-sand fake news town criers already too prevalent in our country.

Polly, you may not find the term demeaning and that's fine. But you don't represent everyone who suffers from this illness or any other disability. I guarantee you that some do find it offensive and their opinions are certainly as valid as yours. --Michael Funke

Re: “Bucket List: Tour with Grateful Dead, Jefferson Starship and the Commodores

I don't think the word "schizoclectic" demeans anyone. I'm bipolar, manic depressive, and people use those words frequently to describe things (or emotions) that vary from extreme to extreme. I fail to see how that somehow insults me, and I fail to see how "schizoclectic" harms those with schizophrenia.

The root of "schizo" is "skei" and it means to cut, separate, divide, part, split. Schizophrenics do not have a monopoly on using "skei" or "schizo" in language.

Re: “Bucket List: Tour with Grateful Dead, Jefferson Starship and the Commodores

As a fellow community radio volunteer here in Central Oregon I appreciate the eclectic mix of music this station offers. But, I find the term "schizoclectic" to be offensive and demeaning to people who suffer from schizophrenia. What is so hip about using language that mocks people with illnesses, mental disorders, and disabilities? Re: “This Modern World

America envies Oregon for we have the brainy Gov. Brown who wants to tax rural Oregon silly so she can virtue-signal via a version of California's unpopular and wholly ineffective cap-and-trade while China and India (both exempted from the Paris climate accords) add a coal plant per week. Real positive effect on the world's emissions? Zero, especially when compared to the positive effect of increased natural gas usage. What's next, a solar-powered bullet train between Portland and Bend funded with $1,000 annual taxes on pickup trucks? Wind-powered detention camps at Portland State for any new Oregonians expressing conservative ideas? Now, that's BRAIINNNSSSS! Who'd have thought we'd find such a smart elistist career bureaucrat like Kate Brown to Californicate Oregon?

Re: “Legislating Morality Through Land Use

We need more than 3 county commissioners! When 2 people can ramrod an issue, there needs to be a little more balance. Five commissioners would be very helpful with staggered terms. Institutional memory can be affected negatively when 2 commissioners come to serve with very little time on the board.
