Re: “Deschutes County's marijuana blues turn a darker hue

Patty Adair is an idiot. But, so-called "moderate" Republicans in Deschutes County--including Knute Buehler, Cheri Helt and Tammy Baney--deserve some credit for allowing her and the Tea Party Trumpers to takeover the Deschutes County Republican Party. I defy any of them to tell us how they fought to prevent this from happening. Republican "moderates" caved to extremists in their party even as they tried to distance themselves from Trump and the extreme right. That allowed someone like Adair to successfully challenge Baney and turn the County Commission to the extreme right. Now, watch all these so-called moderates cozy up to Adair. They deserve what they get, but they have screwed everyone else in Deschutes County, too. --Michael Funke

Re: “Tiny Home Community

Opportunity Village in Eugene is completely different as they are very small, garden shed size, temporary shelters-100 s.f. or less, no plumbing or electricity-basically just homeless shelters. The community in this article has normal style homes about 250-400 s.f. that are not trailers or variations of a garden shed and look much nicer and are a truly affordable community. I'd love to see something like this set aside on the east side for land just added to the UGB instead of developing west side for rich peoples housing or another park. I love the concept of the tiny home, but realistically the homes on wheels and the small garden shed size homes look tacky compared to these.

Re: “Tiny Home Community

Good idea yet this is Bend Oregon pretending to be Aspen Colorado, so this will never happen as reducing developers profit and having a livable city for all people is beyond what Bend will ever allow.

Re: “Tiny Home Community

Even closer to home, Eugene recently completed a similar community of 22 tiny homes in the Whiteaker area called Opportunity Village, the latest from SquareOne Villages: https://www.squareonevillages.org/emerald.

"Bring the November rain," said the big ole Turkey from '76 cloaked in Oregon Green. Any good Trick or Treat stories? Where's Waldo...

Re: “Appropriation vs. Appreciation

Cultural appropriation exists in many forms, particularly in Bend. Opening a ramen restaurant and turning a dish with a serious history into hipster b.s., with zero respect for authenticity or ramen tradition is more than sad, it's insulting. No self-respecting asian would eat there. This place in particular place serves bad food and profits off another cultural food fad. As bad or worse, asian "dumplings" are supposedly Bend's favorite food cart...except they're NOT dumplings. They're called "bao" get your basic facts straight. I wouldn't feed those things to my dog. He might choke on them.

You can serve "ethnic" food and treat it with authenticity and respect, it's totally possible, but these places don't bother.

And then the're the booty-shakin' "yoga" studio....so much for a 5,000-year-old meditative and spiritual practice...you can rock out to an MGMT dance remix.

You can just add all this to the not-so-subtle racism that thrives in Bend. How many times have I seen someone dress in blackface, as a slant-eyed Asian in a cone hat, or as a poncho and sonbrero-wearing Mexican at Mt. Bachelor's pond-skimming contest? too many.

(and if your reply is "don't be so sensitive" or "it's just a joke", that's a something we only hear after someone says or does something racist, sexist, or homophobic)

And remember way back when, when the Source did one of it's person-on-the street surveys? In 2005 or maybe 2006? And asked 3 or 4 white people if they thought racism was still an issue in America? oops. forgot to ask people of color. good job.

Bend is like much of the US, i not as progressive and liberal as it thinks it is.
