Re: “A Personal Top 10 Reading List

Bill Bryson is a great writer and I've enjoyed what I've read of The Body so far.

Re: “Finding the Will to Live

----"Mental health is stigmatized across the board..."

Actually, we are told by those taught or teaching that to conform to that prejudice, but no, we do not have to.

Nor do we have to contribute to teaching it. There is no law that says, "You will conform."

And no, I do not.

Re: “2019 Women in Art

Thank you, Cari, for focusing a spotlight on women artists and the people and organizations who work to help women artists be seen in our community. I want to add you to the top of this list of notable and valuable contributors to the Central Oregon arts community. - Jane Quale, Bend Art Center

Or, maybe this is just fantasy satire.

Re: “The Future is Now

He may not be sitting in a dark room, but he sounds a bit in the dark about the reality around us. The richest 1% in the world own 45% of the wealth; 64% of the world's adults have less than $10,000 each. Authoritarian regimes, including Trump, are creating more economic inequality and promoting divisive racial, gender and class policies that pit them against the rest of us. The climate crisis threatens all of us. Yes, grocery shopping is really stressful--especially when you have no money. Flying cars won't fix any of this. But, I guess none of it exists in Brown's bubbly world. --Michael Funke

Re: “The Ups and Downs in Art

I’ve long thought Bend has a Sister City waiting to be united in Santa Fe, NM. The “Royal City” has a sustained and diverse arts culture from which we could learn much. In turn, Santa Fe seeks to develop its recreation potential. ¡Vamos a encontrar nuestra media naranja!

Re: “The Ups and Downs in Art

This is so sad to me. I am seeing a decreasing value for creativity across our society at a time when it is desperately needed...for hope, for new problems coming at the human species, for our mental health, and for our ability to bond and love across the planet. I will continue to work on Bends creative spirit into the future...where I can! Kathy Hoyt, Creativity Psychologist

Re: “The Ups and Downs in Art

The loss of Bright Place is a void I doubt can be filled. They brought a vibrancy to a lesser used area, and unfortunately in Bend, that vibrancy was seen as a dollar sign. But without Stu and Abby,I see the area falling fallow again soon. They will be missed.

Re: “Sober Holidays

Thanks for this article. I have been served wine anyway when I ask for soda water and when asking if there is anything non-alcoholic often receive a shocked look and offered just water. Luckily our water here is amazing! I think bars and restaurants could attract people by having interesting drinks that don't include a shot of alcohol.
