Re: “Knute Buehler Officially Announces a Run for U.S. Congress

The last thing we need is any more republicans. They represent greed, corruption, anti- environment, tax breaks for the rich and taking away social programs that help people. The GOP is the biggest threat to american democracy America has ever faced. Time to wake up and vote for anyone other than a republican!

Re: “If You Build It, Will They Come?

What Bill Moseley fails to realize and acknowledge is that our current system created to transportation culture we live in. Designing a city around roads for automobiles changes peoples behavior, it is just so ingrained that it is often not recognized as a result of public policy. I'm strongly in favor of more bike and pedestrian measures despite spending about half of my time in a car around this city. This is because the traffic I get stuck in that causes 'swearing every afternoon' is a minor inconvenience compared to the state of our bike lanes and sidewalks. Are none car infrastructure is so bad or non-existent that most don't even use it.

And the reason we need to have an 'open' primary.

Re: “If You Build It, Will They Come?

No amount of bike/walk infrastructure is going to solve the transportation issues in Bend. This city is too big and the vast majority of people are too lazy, not to mention the winters. While walking and biking should be considerations in all projects, letting a few radical bicyclists set the tone for these projects is going to keep the average person from getting to work without sitting in traffic for an hour. Let the traffic engineers do their job, and keep politics out of it.

Re: “If You Build It, Will They Come?

Developers need to pay more bottom line and be forced to upgrade the entire scope of impacted area.

Closed primary is problematic... I am a registered Independent. Will support your run after you make it to the ballot!

Re: “Mothers (and Others) Demand Gun-Related Change

You can't "end" gun violence. What a joke. Even in Japan one gangster unloaded on another with a machinegun, for Christ's sake. All gun control is unconstitutional!

Re: “Mothers (and Others) Demand Gun-Related Change

It's not a gun problem, it's a social problem. You need to make it harder on people who commit crimes with firearms and for people who cannot own firearms. A rifle, or pistol, is nothing but a tool. So let's make it harder for the legal people in this country to purchase firearms, and not really do anything to the criminals who are not supposed to have them. A firearm doesn't discriminate. That bullet goes where the barrel is pointed. It's the person pulling the trigger is the issue, not the tool. The lack of Education in this country is becoming a very bad problem. Please open up your eyes and educate yourself about firearms. It really sucks that people have the mindset that they can go out and handle their problems with a gun. We need to start teaching our children that guns are not toys. I knew that from a young age. Why don't you step back and think why gun violence is happening in this country. But everybody takes the pseudoscience and they run with it. Scientifically proven, an armed Society is a safe Society. Most people don't even know that they taught gun safety up until the sixties in schools. Is it going to order myself, I find the lack of education on this subject is running rampant. There's no such thing as an assault rifle. Assault is a verb. They're called battle rifles. How do I know this because I am a veteran. Taking away things from people doesn't fix the problem. Or making it harder for legal people to purchase a firearm doesn't solve the problem. It's making laws for felons and people who commit crimes with Firearms to be more strict. Thank you for your time. I hope you have a great day.

Re: “Climate Action Plan Passes

@WhereIsWaldo - if buyers are really concerned about a home's energy score, they are free to have an evaluation done as part of their home inspection. Included as a standard clause in the Oregon Residential Sale and Purchase Agreement is the following: "At Buyer's expense, Buyer may have the Property and all elements and systems thereof
inspected by one or more licensed professionals of Buyer's choice."

Furthermore, a home buyer may notify a home seller of the buyer's unconditional disapproval of the property based on any inspection report, terminate the transaction, and have their earnest money refunded.

Conversely, a home seller may elect to have a HES evaluation done and provide the results as part of the marketing of the property.

So one has to wonder why the push to make HES evaluations mandatory.

Re: “Inching Closer to a Mirror Pond Resolution

We have been discussing Mirror Pond for decades. This past year the City and BPRD held public hearings/meetings about next steps and dredging. I attended numerous hearings and City and BPRD council/board meetings in 2019. Support for dredging has been strong, the people want action and the publicly-elected council and board have passed resolutions supporting the long overdue rehabilitation of Mirror Pond with levels of financial commitment. The Public (unlike in the 1980's) have committed financial support to the rehabilitation. It is time we move from talk to action. Mirror Pond has been describe as iconic and a crown jewel of our City. It is time we invest in this cherished asset of our Community. Let's not let another year pass with no action!

Re: “Climate Action Plan Passes

There is no sneaking going on. This is all happening in public. And you want a vote? A vote happened, and the result was to not make HES permanently voluntary. Your POV lost the vote. Deal with it.

Regarding tearing down homes, I doubt that is the standard solution. Energy inefficient homes can be retrofitted. Perhaps visit the Environmental Center for advice if you really are. As a car buyer a lot of information is available to you about the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. Given the much greater cost of a home (and the likely greater monthly energy cost), it only makes sense to me to give potential buyers information about the homes they are considering to spend a small or large fortune on. Its just as useful as a home inspection.

Re: “Climate Action Plan Passes

Very telling that they wouldn't vote to permanently remove the mandatory HES. Obviously they will look for a more convenient time to sneak it back in. Why not put it up for a vote. Secondly, how much energy resources are used to tear down a home and build a new one?

Re: “Inching Closer to a Mirror Pond Resolution

Last I knew, the community was split 50/50 on whether to dredge or not, but just because the dam is staying doesn't mean we have to dredge. Put it to a vote!

Re: “Inching Closer to a Mirror Pond Resolution

"green-generating dam" Mr. Horton, I don't think you can call it green when it kills 6000 fish each year. The Bend hydro Dam has no fish screens on the intake or tail-race. There is no fish passage and the design of the spillway kills fish from the impact at the base of the dam. It is unfair that the irrigation districts and Opal springs are required to invest millions in fish improvements when PacifiCorp does nothing. Additionally, the millions of public dollars spent at the North Unit Dam for fish passage have been mostly a waste of effort since the Bend Hydro Dam has no passage and is hardly more than a mile upstream. No more special treatment for the Mirror pond Dam. Bring it up to a proper standard or get rid of it.
