A PP Headcount

And that's only half the band..."When you're used to crack, it's not the same when you go back to huffing paint," joked Person People's K.P. from the Domino Room stage at the band's raucous CD release show on Saturday night. Neither K.P. nor any other of the 10 other accredited members of Person People smoke crack or huff paint. We're 99 percent sure of it. What K.P. was metaphorically alluding to was the surge of get-downishness that pumped through a mostly full Domino Room when the group's live band took the stage one-third of the way through their set.

Like they did back in the "the Grove days," the MCs arrived onstage accompanied only byDJ A-Bomb and plowed through a few PP numbers and some individual cuts. It was a nice throwback, and the truly all-ages crowd waved its hands in approval, but there was something missing. They soon launched into the PP anthem "Oregonize," and after a slight skip of the beat track from which the guys recovered beautifully, the band had clandestinely arrived provided the bigger, louder, fuller, "cracked out" sound we've become accustomed to.

For the next hour, the band played most of the new heARTbeats disc, in turn giving each MC more than a few solo shots with Herein Rookery (a.k.a Mosley Wotta) and his robustly deep voice often leading the way. But that didn't mean that K.P., Mez, Sorski (and his cartoon villain mustache) and Fish didn't show some skill, because they certainly did. On "Smoke" fiddler Jenny Harada, shined as Rookery provided some piratesque vocals, leading the cut into a String Cheese Incident-ish romp that prompted a wacked out dance explosion. Later, Person People dished out a spirited take on the album's title track, with several loyal fans rhyming along to the ultra positive, radio-friendly song.

And for the record, there was no huffing of paint or using of crack. That was just a metaphor.
