Pennies for Peace Benefit Concert

Adding to the festivities surrounding Greg Mortenson's appearance here in Bend is this late-announced fundraising show that follows the event at Bend High. The lineup brings to the stage two familiar local acts in Blackstrap and The Mostest, playing bluegrass and jam rock, respectively. All you need to get into the show is a $5 minimum donation to benefit the Pennies for Peace project, which helps build schools in Pakistan. All ages. 8pm. Perhaps the most prestigious story ever to come out of Oregon - Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - arrives on the CTC stage beginning this weekend. It's the tale of a ne'er do well, Randall McMurphy, who ends up in a mental institution where he quickly flips the lives of the patients, including the giant Chief Bromden. It looks like Friday and Saturday are already sold out, but there is still availability for other nights. Through Feb. 28. Wed - Sat, 7:30pm, Sun at 2pm. $20/adult, $15/senior, $12/student. The biggest event of the season hits the Old Mill District this weekend as WinterFest descends on Bend. Check out the Sound section to learn about the music offerings, but there's also the big-air Rail Jam, featuring some of the best local skiers and boarders launching off the enormous apparatus. There's also a motorcycle exhibition from Metal Mullisha, tons of food, drinks, crafts, plenty of kids stuff and other entertainment. Sin in the Sagebrush

The High Desert Museum is opening up the doors to its newest, and perhaps most adventurous display this weekend, entitled "Sin in the Sagebrush." The exhibits examine the lives of the, um, gritty folks who lived in the Western frontier - from saloon owners and trappers to gamblers and "women of the night" and all the history that comes with them. You may remember when we wrote about this Guns N' Roses tribute band last summer when they rocked Boondocks. Now, Axl M. and the boys have returned to town, this time heading down to Mountain's Edge. It seems the bluegrass highway has again been routed through Bend, given the recent influx of twangy shows we've seen. But Montana Slim String Band stands out, with excellent picking, but also poppy, silky vocals that set them apart from other acoustic acts. This show raises funds for Habitat for Humanity's Youth United project, which builds a home by young folks between the ages of five and 25. The lineup is anchored by Mosley Wotta and also including indie rockers We Are Brontosaurus as well as emerging high-school instrumental act The Tree Dwellers. $5 at the door, Youth Build T-shirts for $20, designed by Rise Up. 6pm. This fish porn extravaganza makes its annual stop in Bend mid-week. This years entries include a reprise of The Drake magazine's excellent Drift and the final chapter of film tour founder AEG Media's Trout Bum Diaries series, including the fishing platoon's swan song, Metalhead, a B.C. fishing adventure once dubbed the greatest steelhead movie never made. $15 6:30pm, Tower Theater, 835 NW Wall St.
