Our Picks for 11/9-11/17

Events picks for the upcoming week.

Collie Buddz

wednesday 9

This reggae/hip-hop innovator from Bermuda is often called a "singjay" for his ability to not just spit rhymes, but to do so melodically and awesomely. This full-fledged party of a neo-reggae will be a good chance to see one of the biggest up and comers in the genre in a cozy yet festive setting at the Domino Room. Opening the show are Gappy Ranks, New Kingston and Medium Troy. Doors at 7pm. $17.50 at bendticket.com, $20 at the door. All ages. 8pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Last Comic Standing, Semifinal Round

friday 11

With the preliminary rounds behind us and the cream of the proverbial crop having risen to the proverbial top, our big-ass comedy contest continues this week with the top 11 competitors from the opening rounds who will be battling for a spot in the finals and a shot at $5,000 in prizes. The Source's Mike Bookey hosts the event once again. And... once again, we encourage you to go heckle the hell out of him. He deserves it. He also needs a haircut. $7 at bendticket.com. 21+. Doors at 7pm. 8pm. Old Stone Church, 157 NW Greenwood Ave.

Maiden Bend Music Fest

friday 11

All too often, the women in our local music scene get overlooked. And that's a shame because we have some incredibly talented songstresses living right here in Central Oregon. This event at the Tower Theatre, which benefits the nonprofit Saving Grace, is meant to celebrate our female musicians and boasts an all-star lineup of artists including Anastacia, Abigail Nyman, Erin Cole-Baker, Caitlin Cardier, Janelle Johnson and Lisa C. Pollock. There's also a special dance segment choreographed by Gotta Dance. $15 at towertheatre.org. 7pm-9:30pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

The Brothers Young

saturday 12

Those familiar with the extended family tree of the Bend music clan will know this collective, which features the three younger brothers of Loch Lommond's Ritchie Young. No, Ritchie isn't in the band, but he has lent some inspiration to Dustin, Michael and Dillon Young, who come together to create some excellently poppy music they like to call "anti-folk," which is oddly folky. Rural Demons and Oldtimer open. $7. 7pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Church of Neil

saturday 12

For a while now, a group of Bendites has gathered to celebrate the birthday of iconic rocker Neil Young. But what was at first a super under-the-radar celebration at a private residence has grown into a big ol' come-one-come-all party. The show features a number of local musicians playing Neil Young cuts and you can expect some awesome collaborations along the way. Here's the list of artists appearing at the Saturday evening service of the Church of Neil: Doc Ryan & One Night Only, Travis Ehrenstrom Group, Anastacia, Leif James, Rural Demons, Moon Dog Mantinee, Joe Leonardi, Ken Czepelka, Felly Smith, Mark Ransom with The Mostest and more. All Ages. $5. A benefit for the local community arts non-profit, Rise Up International. 7pm. Century Center, 70 SW Century Dr.

Warm Gadget

saturday 12

After a long, long hiatus, one of Bend's weirdest, most experimental acts is returning to the stage. Warm Gadget, featuring an all-out electronic-meets-metal attack, is finally coming back to sizzle some brain units of their faithful fans. Dela Project opens. $3. 8pm. The Horned Hand, 507 NW Greenwood Ave.

Rachel Nelson at Namaspa

saturday - sunday 12-13

Snowsports enthusiasts may recognize Rachel Nelson as a former pro snowboarder. These days Nelson has turned her focus to yoga. A resident of Vail, Colo., Nelson brings her extensive knowledge to Bend when she visits Namaspa studio this weekend as a guest instructor. A certified Baptiste teacher, Nelson is leading a pair of classes, including a traditional session on Saturday and a detox flow class on Sunday. Given her snowsports background, these classes are a great way to get in the zone for the upcoming season. $12 (Sat.) $30 (Sun.) Namaspa, 1135 NW Galveston.

The White Buffalo

monday 14

Just a few months after playing the Horned Hand's opening celebration, Los Angeles troubadour/enormous human being, The White Buffalo, returns to the venue to sing his incredibly emotion-packed musical stories. If you haven't caught him in Bend yet, you're well overdue. 8pm. The Horned Hand, 507 NW Colorado Ave.

Brewed Awakening Signing

wednesday 16

We just received a book in the mail this week called Brewed Awakening, an illustrated tome about the people and beers that are revolutionizing the craft-beer industry. The author of that very book, Joshua M. Bernstein, will be appearing at the Deschutes Brewery Public House to read from, discuss and sign the book. Abyss and Hop in the Dark will be on tap. Deschutes Brewery & Public House, 1044 Bond St.

Great American Taxi

thursday 17

A frequent visitor to Bend, this electrified Americana outfit that's fronted by Leftover Salmon alum Vince Herman, is known to rock the house in and don't expect this set at the Horned Hand to be any different. Opening the show is Colorado bluegrass rockers Whitewater Ramble. 8pm, The Horned Hand, 507 NW Colorado Ave.
