Words on Tap: Willy Vlautin
Stories and Songs

saturday 23

Willy Vlautin is a winning trifecta: critically acclaimed author, frontman for the alt-country band Richmond Fontaine and one tall drink of water. Vlautin's self-proclaimed cynicism manifests itself in both his prose and songwriting, producing emotionally charged, heartrending stories of marginalized Americans. Witness his mastery of storytelling and music—and his good looks—for free at this gig. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Bite of Bend

saturday 23- sunday 24

Bite of Bend is not your standard fill-in-the-blank fest. The local food-oriented Top Chef competition alone makes this two-day event totally worth catching. But there’s more. The 5K Beer Run is a super silly fun run through Drake and Columbia Parks with three stops for beer provided by Cascade Lakes and Deschutes Brewery along the way. Register early and you get a growler at the finish ($5 fill). Back downtown, the Main Stage at the corner of Minnesota Avenue and Wall Street will be booming the best musical acts from Central Oregon. There’ll be bunches of small plates to sample and then there’s the booze! A mixology show and a Bartender’s Brawl will show off the area’s top cocktail creation talent. Kids area, too. For more information see www.thebiteofbend.com. Free. Starts 11am Saturday, June 23, and runs through 7pm Sunday. Downtown Bend.

Pickett's Charge Memorial
Mountain Bike Race

sunday 24

It’s another shot at single track bragging rights and a chance to cheer on your glutton-for-punishment friends and family members in the annual Pickett’s Charge. The race begins at Wanoga and links Tiddlywinks and Funner Trails, including built-in splits for passing. There are short and technical passing lanes as well as some long, fast sections that reward bike handling and brute strength. Sign up before the race and avoid the $10 day-of-race late fee. $25/adults, $15/juniors. OBRA license required. More info at sunnysidesports.com.

Where the Yellowstone Goes

monday 25

A small crew of adventure seekers embarks on a 30-day journey down the Yellowstone River beginning at its namesake national park in Montana and ending in Buford, N.D., at the confluence with the Missouri River. The film explores one of the great Western rivers from the perspective of dedicated fly anglers and the complicated and sometimes convoluted relationship between civilization and our last great natural resources. The screening also includes a Q and A with director Hunter Weeks. $13/advance, $15/door. All ages. 7:30pm Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Chicago Afrobeat Project

tuesday 26

The Chicago Afrobeat Project makes a stop at Silvermoon Brewing in support of their new record Nyash Up. This eight-piece group is considered to be one of the top bands in the global beat genre combining elements of hip-hop, jazz and funk with a Nigerian music style. The end result is music that makes it hard to stand still. $7. Show starts at 9pm. Silvermoon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

Spoken Word Hip Hop Poetry Slam

tuesday 26

Dust off your old notebooks or just come and watch the words fly. No need to prep by watching 8 Mile, but you might be extra ready to throw down if you do. Slam starts at 7pm. Hip-hop performances at 9pm by Jared Paul, K.P., Rory Oneders, Northern Lights and JDubb. Liquid Lounge, 70 NW Newport Ave.

Deschutes Brewery 24th
Anniversary Party

wednesday 27

For many locals, this annual event marks the unofficial start of summer and a great excuse to get out mid-week for a few pints, some cheap grub and open-air tunes. And while the brewery has grown to national acclaim, the annual anniversary celebration takes the party right back to its roots on Bond Street where the vibe remains as local as ever. Music by River Pigs with Scott Foxx. Free. 21+. 5-10pm Deschutes Brewery and Public House, 1044 NW Bond St.

Leftover Salmon

thursday 28

Colorado’s Leftover Salmon plays a distinctly unconventional brand of modern bluegrass and supercharged acoustic Americana that the group affectionately refers to as “polyethnic Cajun slamgrass.” In other words, it’s both danceable and “yee-haw” friendly. See this week’s Sound page for more on the Thursday night performance. All ages. $24/general admission. Doors at 6pm. Show at 6:30pm. Athletic Club of Bend, 61615 Athletic Club Dr. Tickets available at Newport Avenue Market.
