Ashton Eaton Decathlon Competition

thursday 9

Watch our homegrown Olympian Ashton Eaton compete for gold in the final events of the decathlon streamed live from London. Eaton is already the world record holder in the decathlon after he crushed the 1992 record in the Olympic trials in June. This guy is a machine, able to long jump 27 feet and clear a bar nearly 17½ feet off the ground. He runs the 100 meter in 10.21 seconds and the mile in a screaming fast 4:14. Now on the world stage he competes representing the U.S., the U of O, and lil’ old Bend, Ore. 9:30 a.m. Tower Theater, 835 NW Wall St.

The Fixx with special guests Voodoo Highway

thursday 9

One thing leads to another and before you know it you’re forty and the band you loved in high school is playing a free show that you can’t wait to see (and makes you feel old) all at the same time. Such is the case this Thursday when Munch and Music brings the London based pop band The Fixx to town. Voodoo Highway starts it off at 6pm. But you better get there early cuz I’m bringing the entire class of ’84. Drake Park, Downtown Bend.

The Sunriver Art Faire

friday 10 – sunday 12

The Sunriver Art Faire takes place this weekend and all that is missing is the kitchen sink. The fair features sixty juried artisans showcasing ceramics, glass, jewelry, metal and sculpture (kitchen sink?), painting, photography, woodwork, textiles and mixed media. You can also enjoy a pancake breakfast, two artists’ receptions, live music, a street dance, artists’ demonstrations, wine, food and a family day. Just don’t try to do it all in one day for cryin’ out loud. That’s how people get hurt. Friday August 10-12th Sunriver Village, Sunriver.

The Tempest

friday 10 – sunday 12

Shakespeare’s classic tale of honor, greed, betrayal and redemption is transported to Yasgur’s farm, i.e.  Woodstock circa 1969 in this updated treatment of the Bard’s maritime tale. GoodLife Brewing Company will host this free, three-day run in its Bier Garden. Show up to learn whether Hendrix makes a cameo. Free. All ages. 7 p.m. (2 p.m. Sunday) Good Life Brewing.

High Desert Celtic Festival and Highland Games

saturday 11

Celebrate the art, music and culture of Celts. Molly’s Revenge, the fiddle champion of Scotland, Rebecca Lomnicky and Central Oregon’s own High Desert Celtic Country Dancers, will perform traditional and contemporary folk music and dance. The Highland Games are a Celtic strong man competition, in which men in kilts lift and throw just about anything they can get their hands on. Don’t miss the Putting the Stone event in which competitors throw a 17 pound rock as far as they can in the style of shot-put and the Scottish hammer throw, which is pretty self-explanatory. $10. Entertainment starts at 10 a.m., opening ceremonies at 12 p.m. Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 430 SW Fairgrounds Rd.

Perseid Metor Shower Star Party

saturday 11

Perhaps the most stunning astrological phenomenon of the year, the Perseid meteor shower lights up the night sky this weekend. While the show can be enjoyed from just about anywhere free of significant pollution (read anywhere in Central Oregon that’s not next to a car dealership) it might be best appreciated out at Rimrock Ranch in Sisters where the Deschutes Land Trust and the Sisters Astronomy Club will be setting up telescopes and helping would-be astronomers get acquainted with the night sky. Free. Registration required. 7:30 p.m.  Rimrock Ranch, 541-330-0017.

Sunriver Music Festival

through august 22

The Sunriver Music Festival is in full swing and we recommend you get in on some culture in the coming weeks. This weekend features a family concert at the Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic Recreation Center, a pops concert focusing on The Beatles at Bend High and two classical concerts highlighting some of the most powerful music ever written. The good stuff keeps on rolling through the 22nd. Check it all out at www.sunrivermusicfestival.org.

Unleash the Vision

monday 13

It’s like a party for your dog that aims to raise money for the nonprofits Feedin’ the People, Neighbor Impact, Family Access Network, City Care and DHS. Events include something called a “Doggy Poker Walk,” a talent show for dogs, a loud barking auction and other forms of four-legged friend-themed action. Live music and stand-up comedy. Should be “interesting” and worth checking out just for the novelty. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Near McKay Park, 166 SE Shevlin Hixon Dr.

Norah Jones

wednesday 15

Nine-time Grammy Award winner Norah Jones’ latest release, Little Broken Hearts, is darker and more angry than her previous albums. Tracks like "After the Fall," "Take it Back" and "Say Goodbye" beg the question who’s been messin’ with Ms. Jones? Produced in collaboration with Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) the album veers away from her jazz roots and injects a healthy dose of pop into the mix. Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons open the show. Tickets are $39-$60 at bendconcerts.com. Les Schwab Ampitheater, Les Schwab Ampitheater, Old Mill District.

Bend Brewfest

thursday 16- saturday 18

Join the masses for one of Bend’s favorite activities, outdoor beer drinking. Over one hundred ales and lagers will be flowing steadily for the three day Bend Brewfest. The ninth annual event will feature a specialty X Tap that pours rotating, low production beers that you can’t buy on the shelves. Local food vendors cook up some good eats and 51 different breweries will be serving everything from IPAs to hard ciders. Eat, drink and enjoy! Free admission. $10 Brewfest mug and beer tokens. Thu-Fri 3 p.m.-11p.m., Sat 12 p.m.-11p.m. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 Southwest Shevlin Hixon Dr.
