Designing Healthy, Livable Communities
Dr. Jackson is a dynamic presenter and author who has a passion for discovering how the 'built environment,' including architecture and urban planning, affect health - especially for children. Currently, Dr. Jackson is working on policy analyses of environmental impacts on health including topics such as sustainability, climate change, urban design, transportation policies, education, housing and architecture. Dr. Jackson co-authored two Island Press Books: Urban Sprawl and Public Health in 2004 and Making Healthy Places in 2011. Dr. Jackson recently appeared on PBS' Tavis Smiley Show to discuss his latest book, Designing Healthy Communities, and a three-part PBS series “Designing Healthy Communities” which aired nationwide in January 2012.
SRTS-now in it’s 7th year, Safe Routes to School helps students walk and bike safely in their neighborhoods. Commute Options teaches bicycle and pedestrian safety skills to elementary and middle schoolers, offers incentives and encouragement to families and helps communities improve the physical environment and surrounding schools.
Commute Options Brian Potwin attended the 2012 National Bike Summit, hearing from keynote speakers and politicians — Oregon Reps. Peter DeFazio and Earl Blumenauer among them — and got to test out the Capitol Bikeshare program. A docking station, one of about 150 scattered throughout the national’s capital, was conveniently located just next to The Capital Building!
