Our Picks 4/24 - 5/2

Bobby Joe Ebola and The Children MacNuggits

thursday 25

MUSIC—Bobby Joe and the MacNuggits sound like the feral offspring of Tenacious D and Larry and His Flask, which is a good thing. Often funny, sometimes searing, the Bay Area band's social commentary and furious folk-punk songs are always entertaining. Just ask YouTube. These guys might be your new favorite. 8 pm. The Horned Hand, 507 NW Colorado Ave. $5.

Sassparilla

Cowboy Junkies

monday 29

MUSIC—In the middle of the '80s MTV revolution, when mainstream music was judged for its pomp and danceability, the Cowboy Junkies were an unlikely sensation. Their laconic and bluesy songs are now categorized as alt-country, but then were simply a new, eerie, twangy, strangely enticing sound. Margo Timms' voice is as siren enchanting as ever. 7 pm, Tower Theatre, $32-$47.

Roll on Columbia

tuesday 30

FILM & MUSIC—Woody Guthrie only spent one summer in the Pacific Northwest, in 1941, but in that brief time he penned 26 songs that pitch-perfect capture the area's muscular beauty and languid desperation. With an introduction by director Michael O'Rourke, tonight's film offers a glimpse at a true American musical hero. Event includes a musical presentation by Bill Murlin. 7 pm, McMenamins, 700 NW Bond St. Free.
