    Trail Rules Observance

As an intermediate "older" rider, I don't feel overly worthy to critique my fellow trail riders. But, it's spring, and we are all getting back out for some riding, creating this opportunity for a comment.

Recently, I did a few loops out at Maston. It's not overly technical, but there are a couple of rocky sections, and one modest rocky climb in particular if you are riding counterclockwise. Not particularly steep, but rocky enough to be challenging.

As I started up, three "elderly" male iders "charged" down, completely ignoring my climbing efforts. Basically, they hogged the center line, not adhering to the "climber has right of way" general rule. I was forced off the line, and eventually to a stop to avoid an accident. The downhill rider offered no apology, even after I kindly reminded him of the basic etiquette of mountain biking.

Granted, perhaps my bright orange jacket did not offer enough visibility, nor did I shout out a "rider coming up" warning. I will be in the future.

But, I thought by the second or third rider, they might get with the program. But, no. I guess they felt compelled to just keep on trucking, oblivious of fellow riders, and generally safe riding.

This rude trail behavior is totally unacceptable, especially for guys who should know better, as evidenced by their nice gear and an estimated $400 of flashy attire.

If you want to try and be a mountain biker, great. More power to you. But please be courteous. Being old does not automatically give you the right of way. Act like a real mountain biker, and respect your fellow riders. Spread some good will.

    And keep shredding.
