Re: “Local Paintings Censored

So those three words were offensive on Bullwinkel's art, but weren't they even more offensive when uttered publicly by the person who sits in the Oval Office?

Re: “A Central Oregonian is the New Secretary of State

Congratulations Bev! I can't imagine a person better suited. Many years ago I had the opportunity to work with Bev on a project - her house. She is down-to-earth, straightforward, sensible, has complete integrity, and is able and willing to work across the aisle for the good of the people of Oregon.

Re: “Farmers Markets Open for Summer

I wish, wish, wish more vendors would set up at the Friday market at Mt. View High School. Some of my go-to booths set up only downtown. It is such a pain in the rear to negotiate the traffic downtown and find a bloomin' place to park within reasonable distance for toting my bags of purchases. How many blocks do you want to carry your ears of corn, melons, half-flats of berries, bags of peaches or tomatoes, bundles of veggies, and the Ocean Roll to munch on the way home? It's a Catch-22. The eastside Farmers market doesn't get much traffic because there aren't as many vendors, and there aren't as many vendors because the market doesn't get much traffic.

Re: “Rethinking City Council

Perhaps it is archaic to have a volunteer City Council. I suggest minimum wage would be appropriate.

Re: “Bend-La Pine Schools to hold public meeting about future of Troy Field

I would prefer the city keep the public facilities designation rather than see yet another enclave for the wealthy be built. If Troy Field is not going to be kept as open space, then it would be much better for Bend if the zoning were changed to Multi-Family Residential, and see affordable apartments be built there. Bend needs affordable housing, not more rich-people housing.

Re: “Freedom Is Nothing Left To Lose

This decision reeks of elitism, and I question its constitutionality. If someone commits a crime, whether downtown or in any other part of Bend, arrest them and give them due process. Someone in this thread said it earlier - Bend is becoming like one big homeowners association in an elite gated community. Heaven forbid there should be anything remotely distasteful, heaven forbid we should let "those people" move freely in our picture perfect town. I don't like it at all.

Re: “Brain Magnet or Brain Drain?

In reply to NIMBYs Ruin Bend: First, I am not a NIMBY. I live in northeast Bend and would love to have a university campus in my back yard. Second, I have a masters degree and doctoral candidacy, pursue continuing education always, and am hardly anti-intellectual. Third, of the 1000 reported apartment units to be built in the near future in Bend, just 151 of them are on the westside. It's likely that the majority of OSU-Cascades students living off campus will be living on the eastside. And I don't believe for a moment that all of them will be riding bikes or taking the bus all the time, unless the bus routes and frequency are vastly improved. Fourth, none of us can predict what OSU-Cascades will be like in 30, 50, 100 years in terms of enrollment, programs and so forth. Why shoot ourselves in the foot before we even begin? And last, this is an opinion column. I have mine, you have yours.
