Re: “Racism with a Smile ▶ (with video)

Thank you Mr. Waites for being a leader in our community. We need more black leaders like yourself. Have you considered running for a Bend La Pine School Board position? This would be a wonderful way for you to help create change in our education system. Change starts with our children. I for one would love to see more POC in leadership roles where we can come together and create change that will benefit everyone.

Re: “Guest Opinion: Let's Talk Optics ▶ (with video)

Thank you Marcus LeGrand. Please let me know how I can help. We are currently forming a group here in Bend to learn about racism, discuss it and we all want to help but we need guidance. I created a post on Nextdoor and got a wonderful response and I would like to connect with you. Thank you for your speech. Nicole Moore Perullo

Re: “Cell Tower Wars… Continued

Why are commenters bringing politics and rude comments into a public health and safety issue. It portrays you to be very ignorant. This is a very valid health concern if you do your research. There are 5G summits being held with leaders around the world discussing this very thing. I commend Ms. Rose for standing up for what she understands to be a public health and safety concern. At least someone in our community is concerned. Unfortunately the city of Bend will have financial gains to be had with that Verizon Cell tower and they are supposed to be representing and protecting our city and it's residents and they are not listening.

Re: “Raising the Bar

I actually saw this same scene but on Friday night which was much more crowded at the River Pig Saloon on my way to the grocery store Market of Choice. This is insane people.....wear your masks and social distance! Have respect for the community at large. This does not look like a good example of a phase I roll out. I hope this shut this situation down.

Re: “Crook County Sees Its First COVID-19 Case

Exactly, here is the problem. We can't get tested. My doctor thinks I have Covid-19 but won't test me. Instead I had to get blood work drawn up, and EKG and a chest X-ray to rule out other possibilities. God knows what that will cost me with insurance deductibles. We are not getting tested and so we are not in the numbers. Because our numbers are so low from not getting tested, we will not get sent the resources we will need. Our government should mandate testing. I guarantee the numbers would be much higher in all counties. My doctor said that the CDC and our local government said no testing unless you are 60 years old or you need a vent...this is ridiculous. We are not in the national numbers either. I get they will treat you with the same protocol unless you can't breathe but people need to know. We live in America and pay a fortune for medical insurance and we have the right to know if we have this virus. We will need to know anyway for immunity reasons as well down the line.

Re: “Cutting Waste in Deschutes County

Cutting Waste starts at home and in schools. My children have evoked a passion in me about education and the environment. I feel that everyone needs to start at home by taking a stance against convenience and make some hard decisions about how and where they shop and eat and what they are eating. For instance, my children love the seaweed packets and just this snack alone creates so much waste between the plastic that holds all the containers of seaweed, to the foil, preservative packets inside and the plastic that holds the seaweed itself. I am committed to not buying these and to reach out to companies who manufacturers that sell these products to ask them their role in helping save the environment as this is not helping the environment at all. This is just one small example. Maybe consider buying containers and bringing to supermarket and buying bulk to reduce the waste of plastic and boxes for cereal, rice, sugar, flour etc.. This is time consuming but totally worth helping reduce waste. We need to stop blaming and take responsibility in our individual homes to make a collective effort as a community to stop the waste. Don't patron restaurants for take out food that use plastics, styrofoam and plastic bags or simply bring your own containers. This is all time consuming and maybe difficult for many to not think of convenience but convenience got us in this mess to begin with. But this all starts with us as parents taking responsibility and teaching our children. If kids wrote these letters too in their social studies or language arts class, it would be a great tool in teaching them to advocate for their future, learn writing skills and teaching them how to bring about change. We should have school gardens, teaching children about their food and creating a connection to their food so we can stop buying so much processed food. They could learn about composting, recycling , up-cycling and being more conscience about how they contribute and what they can do for our planet. This could create excitement in them to bring the ideas home and teach their parents. The lunch program definitely needs an overhaul as well. There should be a ban on bringing anything that is not in reusable containers if bringing a lunch to school and the cafeterias should have only reusable cutlery, cups and plates. We need to start first at home with cutting down our waste.
