Bend Gets Bike Share Program

On Friday, May 24 Commute Options is rolling out what will be Bend's only bike share program, a need-a-bike, take-a-bike situation that'll be based at the Commute Options offices on 50 SW Bond St. The bikes, there's to be three of them—teal green and made by Eric Power over at Bend Velo, will be for the 25 or so employees that work in the buildings nearby.

"We wanted to start low key," said Jeff Monson, Commute Options' executive director. A bigger initiative would have been great, but much more expensive. The current project—bikes, storage area, tools, pump, etc.—cost close to $1,500, Monson said. There's no fee associated with usage, instead interested parties will sign out a bike and include their destination. That way Commute Options can round up some impressive figures by year's end. Monson hopes this pilot program will motivate other employers and centralized offices to create their own bike share programs. Washington D.C., home to Capital Bikeshare, has more than 1,800 bikes available for public use (for a nominal fee).
