On March 15, students in Bend high schools walked out of class to participate in the Youth Climate Action Walkout. Students at schools nationwide also participated. At Bend Senior High School, organizers say several hundred students took part in the walkout. Some continued on to Drake Park to join with other students, demonstrating from other schools in the area. In order to stem the tide of global warming, students are asking national leaders to transition to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030, to implement the Green New Deal and to offer compulsory, comprehensive education on climate change and its impacts through grades K to 8, among other demands.
"We have just over ONE decade to take radical action on decreasing our global footprint before the effects of climate change become irreversible," students stated in a release.
