Boy Girl Dance Party

Anjali and The Incredible Kid globalize EDM

It is like a Lonely Planet glossary of terms: Bhangra is folk from the Punjabi region of India, remixed with hip-hop. And, Purnima, this weekend's dance party is the Indian word for full moon. Also important to understand are the twisting beats of Bollywood, and the tinny strings of shimmering Balkan gypsies.

Anjali and the Incredible Kid shake those global sensibilities free from the constrains of language and familiarity, and create a worldly sound that spans genres and oceans.

Since the early 2000s, the pair has been a shaping force in the Portland electronic scene, broadcasting their global outlook weekly on their radio show on KBOO, Portland's community radio station.

On Saturday, Anjali and the Incredible Kid will perform at Purnima (again, the Indian word for full moon, say it with us, Pur-knee-MA), a party benefit for Central Oregon Locavore; along with locals DJ Byrne, bPollen, Moksha, and Runi with Washington's iLko. Beyond the music the event offers up a drink menu featuring Kombucha Mama, Crazy Dave's Ginger Brew, Top Leaf, Oregon Spirit Distillers and One Sky Chai in a fundraiser for Central Oregon Locavore and an all-night dance party.

"Pairing with Central Oregon Locavore's non-profit has been an absolute pleasure," says Ilko Major, studio owner, producer and DJ, who spends his time split between Washougal, Wash., and Bend, and works with the group The Cascadia Connextion to bring electronic shows to town. "Anything to give back to one of the hardest working storefronts in Bend. They bring locally sourced food to our table. Say no more."

Under the stage name iLko, Major streams blended beats, everything from building chirping, high-energy jammers to down-low 808s in always-danceable, digestible, fluid sets.

"The nice thing to see here in Bend is how these events are organized, run and funded by locals that just want to support the community and have a good time doing so," says Major.
