Bring Your Tunes Along For the Ride: Jawbone’s Big Jambox aims at making your summer vacation a musical one

The Big Jambox is primarily a speaker that will stream your music over Bluetooth connectivity, but will also play sound from your games or movies and has a built in mic for hands free calling.

If you’re someone who likes to provide your friends with a party no matter the location, Jawbone’s latest addition to the crowded world of portable wireless speakers might just be the gadget for you.

Jawbone, known for their Bluetooth headsets, first entered the speaker market with the Jambox. Ultra-small and lightweight, the original Jambox speaker fit in the palm of your hand and weighed less than a pound. Now, for those needing a bit more punch, Jawbone has released the not-so-creatively-named Big Jambox.

At just under three pounds, the Big Jambox remains portable, though not messenger bag portable. And with three different designs to choose from—red dimples, black hexagons or whitish waves— the aesthetics are clean and appealing.

The Big Jambox is primarily a speaker that will stream your music over Bluetooth connectivity, but will also play sound from your games or movies and has a built in mic for hands free calling. Two devices can be connected to the Big Jambox at the same time and as a major convenience over other products, it will store a very pleasing eight paired devices.

Jawbone also touts the Big Jambox as a “smart speaker,” as it can be loaded with apps that will allow you to leverage the mic for talk-to-text functionality, set calendar alerts and customize the voice of its menu assistant. You can still hook your devices up via a 3.5mm audio jack, with the included cord, but when used over Bluetooth, the Big Jambox offers very convenient play/pause and track selection buttons on top of the speaker unit.

So how about the sound? In short, it’s pretty dang good.

For a speaker so small, the Big Jambox reproduces sound with great bass and well defined mids and highs.  One of the best features available is Jawbone’s “Live Audio” technology which simulates 3D speaker placement by throwing sound to trick your ears into thinking you’re at a concert. When activated, it is quite effective at achieving this feat and really shines when placed outside, which is really where the Big Jambox belongs. But it also sounds awesome indoors when used in a smaller living room or normal-sized bedroom.

At 15 hours of continuous use on one charge it’s a sweet option for your summer activities. Just be courteous when using it. The Big Jambox may sound great, but that doesn’t mean everyone at the beach wants to hear you singing along to that Bieber album.
