Cake: Showroom of Compassion

After a seven-year absence, Cake returns with one of its most solid albums yet.

Yes, this is the same Cake you're thinking of - the one that scored a handful of hits in the mid-to-late 1990s and has survived on our conscience by way of inclusion in movies and television shows. Somewhat unexpectedly, Cake has returned with what might be one of the Sacramento-based acts strongest offerings in Showroom of Compassion.

While the 11 tracks on this album are unmistakably Cake, the band seems to have aged well in the seven years since releasing the mostly overlooked yet solid Pressure Chief, incorporating edgy electronic sounds ("Easy to Crash") and even further widening the band's range. But Cake hasn't abandoned its often-goofy jams as front man John McCrae's distinctively droll voice is as punchy as ever, delivering the sort of lyrical cleverness fans have come to expect from this band on songs like "Federal Funding."

Perhaps most interesting about this album, outside of the already popular single, "Sick of You" are two folk songs, "Bound Away" and "The Winter" - two tracks that give us a chance to hear Cake at their rootsy best, harkening back to band's peak, perhaps providing a hint as to where the band is heading. Cake may have slipped to the back of some of our minds, but with an offering like Showroom, the band shows that they're not ready to be forgotten.
