Chief Paulina Was No Role Model

I enjoyed your column last week in the Source on Newberry National Volcanic Monument. I only took exception on one item and that was your reference to Grand Old Chief Paulina.

Perhaps you and some of your readers are not aware that the Chief was a notorious renegade who killed many ranchers and settlers. In fact, I believe the Army came to Sisters at Camp Polk specifically to capture Paulina to no avail. Chief Paulina was finally tracked down by a posse of ranchers out by Antelope and killed. Funny how his name is on mountains and lakes and other points of interest with no mention of his victims or the people that finally stopped his rein (sic) of terror.
