Re: “Tired of newcomers, Portlanders make anti-tourism video

The issues of gentrification, overcrowding, increased cost of living etc. do need to be addressed but drawing a line in the sand, taking a war-like "stay out" approach is not the answer. Xenophobia is xenophobia and it is always a backwards, conservative stance that will not succeed in the long run (or maybe even the short run). We live in an overpopulated world and anywhere decent to live must deal with the issues that Portland is dealing with. Portland should actively find solutions, but it should find creative, non-combative solutions and, in that way, be an example to the rest of the world. The attitude of this video is the exact same as the anti-immigration attitudes of the most conservative politicians in the United States and Europe. In fact the video is subtly acknowledging this with the basis of it's humor, imitating the feel of a 1950s educational video - a decade defined by it's conservative narrow-mindedness and bigotry. The whole humor of it is that it is imitating this style that we know to be ignorant and conservative, and that style is funny to us precisely because it is so ridiculous in this way. And yet it is expecting us to not take the next step and go "Oh yeah, and this style makes sense for the video because this is a conservative, narrow-minded, hostile, reactionary message. I guess it's bullshit and we need to find another way."
